Senior Network Engineer – Encrypted Classified Networks
Location: Washington, DC (On-site/Hybrid as required)
Company: Aquarian Systems – Supporting the U.S. Department of State, Communication Security Division
Clearance Required: Active TS/SCI (Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information)
Overview:
Aquarian Systems is seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer to support the Department of State’s Communication Security Division. This position plays a critical role in designing, securing, and maintaining encrypted classified networks that protect U.S. national security information.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in secure network design, encryption technologies, and classified system integration — with knowledge of COMSEC (Communications Security) processes and procedures being a strong advantage.
Key Responsibilities:
-Design, implement, and maintain secure network architectures supporting classified and encrypted communications.
-Configure, integrate, and optimize encryption technologies (e.g., Type 1 KG encryptors, IPsec, VPNs, and other cryptographic solutions).
-Collaborate with federal stakeholders and internal engineering teams to ensure alignment with CNSS, NSA, and Department of State standards.
-Perform risk assessments and implement technical and procedural security controls to safeguard classified network environments.
-Support continuous monitoring and respond to incidents affecting network integrity and confidentiality.
-Document and maintain detailed network diagrams, configuration baselines, and security procedures.
-Serve as a senior technical advisor on secure communications, encryption integration, and emerging cyber threats.
-Leverage COMSEC knowledge to ensure proper handling, accountability, and protection of cryptographic materials and devices.
Required Qualifications:
-Active TS/SCI clearance (mandatory).
-7+ years of experience in network engineering, including work with classified or high-security environments.
-Proven expertise in secure WAN/LAN architectures, network hardening, and encrypted communications.
-Strong understanding of network protocols, routing, switching, and encryption integration.
-Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex network and security issues.
-Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.
-Professional certifications such as CCNP, CISSP, CEH, or equivalent highly preferred.
-Experience supporting federal agencies, particularly the Department of State, is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Working knowledge of COMSEC policies, key management, and controlled cryptographic item (CCI) handling.
-Familiarity with NSA-approved encryption systems and classified communications standards.
-Experience developing or supporting network security compliance within U.S. government frameworks (e.g., NIST 800-53, CNSSI 1253).
