Join HII-Mission Technologies as a Chief Data Engineer, supporting the United States Forces Korea (USFK), Assistant Chief of Staff, J2 (ACofS, J2) JIOC-K! You'll play a key role in providing critical and timely intelligence to the Commander, USFK, Combined Forces Command, and their associated staffs and commanders.
The JIOC-K's mission focuses on identifying enemy threats, overseeing Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) activities, and dissecting enemy actions to anticipate their likely strategies. This analytical work is essential for enhancing Defense Intelligence, ensuring that accurate, timely, and comprehensive all-source intelligence reaches the Commander and other users. You'll also contribute to transforming theater intelligence operations, leveraging global intelligence capabilities to protect U.S. personnel and interests in the Korea Theater of Operations (KTO). What you will do
Architecture & Strategy:
- Define overall data architecture and engineering roadmap
- Evaluate and select technologies (data lakes, warehouses, orchestration tools, ML platforms)
- Ensure systems are scalable, reliable, and secure
Building & Scaling Systems:
- Lead design and development of enterprise data pipelines (batch + real-time)
- Optimize performance, storage, and compute resources
- Implement data quality, lineage, and governance frameworks
Leadership & Mentorship:
- Act as technical mentor to senior and mid-level engineers
- Drive best practices in code quality, testing, CI/CD, and observability
- Sometimes function as technical lead on major programs
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner with data scientists, analysts, and business leaders to enable advanced analytics & ML
- Work with security and compliance organization
Innovation & Future-Proofing:
- Research emerging tools (lakehouse, streaming, AI-driven data management)
- Pilot and implement next-gen data architectures
- Additional duties as assigned or required
What we are looking for
- 20+ years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 18+ years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 15+ years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 24 years relevant experience
- Prior leadership in architecting large-scale data platforms
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Java, Scala)
- Strong background in distributed data systems (Spark, Hadoop, Flink, Kafka, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Databricks)
- Deep understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data warehousing
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and modern data lake/lakehouse architectures
- Knowledge of data governance, security, compliance (especially relevant in DC for government/defense)
- Strong communication and leadership skills- mentoring engineers and working with stakeholders
- Strategic thinking- ability to balance scalability, cost efficiency, and performance
- Able to surge support during 2 exercises per year
- Clearance: Must possess and maintain a TS/SCI clearance, with the continued ability to obtain a Poly
