Within Boeing Technology Innovation's Mission System Technologies (MST) organization, the thermal lab team performs innovation, development and maturation of advanced computing technologies and its associated subordinate technologies.

Boeing Technology Innovation is looking for a Deputy Chief Engineer based in El Segundo, CA. As Deputy Chief Engineer, you will act as a technical advisor to help solve complex problems, contribute to the operations of a process plant/facility with rotating machinery, heat exchangers, instrumentation and control systems. The Deputy Chief Engineer will demonstrate knowledge and experience across a wide range of disciplines such as thermo-fluid analysis, mechanical/fluid design, rotating machinery, control systems, and test to operate and maintain a test facility. The Deputy Chief Engineer is an integral part of the project leadership team

In pursuit of Boeing's research and business interests, the successful candidate will:
  • Leverage knowledge and experience across a wide range of disciplines to maximize up time of a cryogenic laboratory
  • Provide innovative approaches and unique solutions to address complex nonconforming conditions and detect deviations from operational requirements
  • Provide high impact, creative solutions to complex technical problems
  • Provide critical support and independent review of teammate's work


Candidate shall be able to show recent demonstrated ability in one or more of the following areas:
  • Lead technical integration across a wide range of disciplines including thermo-fluid design, analysis, and functional demonstrations of the finished product
  • Knowledge of low temperature fluids at phase boundary conditions sufficient to monitor and make operational decisions in real-time
  • Contribute to process plant/facility design, engineering laboratory operations with rotating machinery, heat exchangers, instrumentation and control systems
  • Communicate dense technical concepts on rotating machinery, heat exchangers, instrumentation & control systems to less experienced staff
  • Thrive in small team environment where individuals are entrepreneurial self-starters who produce engineering products involving multiple disciplines
  • Participation in Research & Development involving highly technical, complex engineering content


Position Responsibilities:
  • The successful applicant will oversee a team of engineers and facility personnel in service of test, operations and maintenance of a plant that processes many diverse commodities
  • Champion safety culture by analyzing reported issues and recommend/manage resolutions
  • Serves as deputy to Chief Engineer who is accountable for technical integrity and safety
  • Lead investigations of challenging technical, operational and quality issues to design interim and final engineering solutions for implementation
  • Ensures technical baseline control and identifies risks via monitoring of process data and recommends improvements.
  • Co-chairs Change Board, Technical Design Reviews and Safety Review Board.


Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret / SCI Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)
  • 5+ years of experience in leading a team of engineers, suppliers, and support personnel in the technical design, development, integration, and test of a large scale complex mechanical and fluid system test facility
  • Effectively communicate with technical and non-technical personnel at all organization levels including suppliers and customers


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Experience in a Chief Engineer or Lead Engineer role responsible for ensuring system and product integration across multiple disciplines
  • Previous technical ownership of high-cost hardware with responsibility to ensure performance supports operational needs.
  • Demonstrated leadership in finding root cause to technical issues and mitigating technical risk.
  • Familiarity with ASME Piping Codes and Standards (B31.3)

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

Summary pay range: $124,100 - $167,900
