ORGANIZATION SUMMARY STATEMENT
The University of Maryland's Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) is seeking a IT Systems Engineer to support our research and development infrastructure. This early-career role provides hands-on experience working with experienced engineers to manage IT systems, support cloud computing environments, and help maintain secure, high-performance computing platforms. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, detail-oriented, and committed to supporting scientific and defense-related research through reliable and scalable IT systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support Systems Maintenance – Assist with the upkeep, patching, and monitoring of enterprise systems and hardware infrastructure.
• Help Manage Cloud and Linux Environments – Support cloud deployments and perform basic Linux system administration tasks with guidance.
• Assist with IT Deployments – Contribute to implementation of virtual machines, software systems, and network configurations.
• Support Cybersecurity Compliance – Monitor for system alerts and assist in implementing organizational security practices.
• Collaborate with Engineering Teams – Work alongside senior engineers to troubleshoot technical issues and apply problem-solving strategies.
• Contribute to Documentation – Help create system diagrams, SOPs, and records of IT configurations and updates.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance. Candidates selected for the role must be U.S. citizens and will undergo a background investigation including criminal and credit checks, employment history, and education verification.
PREFERENCES
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
• Relevant internships or part-time work in IT systems support or system administration.
• Experience or coursework in Linux or Windows system administration.
• Exposure to AWS, Azure, or other cloud platforms.
• Familiarity with cybersecurity tools or policies.
• Interest in quantum computing concepts and emerging technologies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Standard office work including extended periods using a computer. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally. In-person attendance required five (5) days per week at the office. Occasional on-site system maintenance support may be required.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
None required. Entry-level certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, or AWS Cloud Practitioner) are beneficial.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience: Up to two (2) years of relevant experience in IT support, systems administration, or network configuration.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Basic knowledge of Linux and/or Windows operating systems.
• Familiarity with virtualization platforms and cloud computing fundamentals.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office Suite.
• Willingness to support secure research environments and compliance protocols.
