Position Summary:
The University of Maryland's Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) is seeking a skilled Systems Engineer to support cutting-edge research projects in quantum computing and quantum communications. This position involves implementing, configuring, and maintaining complex unclassified and classified quantum technology systems, secure networking infrastructure, and encryption protocols.
The role focuses on supporting innovative solutions to assess and troubleshoot challenging national security problems requiring sophisticated computational infrastructure with emphasis on quantum-safe cryptography, secure network design, and advanced encryption systems. The engineer will assist in implementing quantum-ready network architectures, configure and test post-quantum cryptographic protocols, and help maintain secure communications for sensitive research environments.

Implements and maintains technical infrastructure including quantum networking testbeds, encrypted communication channels, virtualized infrastructure, hybrid cloud solutions, and high-performance computational systems with quantum acceleration capabilities.

Supports comprehensive security monitoring, incident response, cryptographic key management, and compliance infrastructure to support mission requirements, security regulations, and contractual obligations in quantum computing environments.

Works under guidance of senior staff while contributing technical expertise to quantum research technology projects.




Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1)Core Technical Duties (55%):
• Network Implementation and Maintenance (20%)
◦ Implement and configure secure quantum-ready network architectures
◦ Maintain high-speed, low-latency networks for quantum systems
◦ Configure network protocols for quantum communications under supervision
• Encryption and Cryptography (20%)
◦ Configure and manage advanced encryption protocols and systems
◦ Assist with quantum key distribution (QKD) system implementation
◦ Test and validate post-quantum cryptographic algorithms
• System Administration and Engineering (15%)
◦ Support integrated quantum computing and classical computing environments
◦ Monitor and optimize system performance for quantum workloads

2) Security Implementation and Testing (25%):
• Cryptographic Security Support (15%)
◦ Maintain classified and unclassified encryption systems
◦ Support cryptographic key management infrastructure
◦ Assist with security assessments of quantum communication protocols
• Network Security and Testing (10%)
◦ Support penetration testing and vulnerability assessments
◦ Monitor and respond to security incidents in quantum environments
◦ Help maintain security protocols and compliance frameworks
3) System Administration (15%)
• Linux System Administration (10%)
◦ Administer and optimize Linux-based quantum computing platforms
◦ Support system deployment and configuration management
◦ Monitor system performance and reliability metrics
• Infrastructure Support (5%)
◦ Support virtualized and cloud-based quantum computing resources
◦ Assist with backup and disaster recovery procedures

4) Technical Support and Documentation (5%)
• Support research technology projects (3%)
• Create system documentation and support process improvement (2%)

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Information Technology, or a related field with coursework in networking and/or cryptography
• 1-3 years of systems engineering or IT experience with exposure to network configuration and security
• Solid Linux system administration and basic scripting skills (bash, python)
• Foundational networking knowledge including TCP/IP, basic routing protocols, and network troubleshooting
• Basic understanding of encryption and cryptography concepts including symmetric/asymmetric encryption
• Network configuration experience with switches, routers, and basic network testing
• Some experience with virtualization or cloud platforms
• Basic security monitoring and incident response knowledge
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Effective communication skills to interact with technical stakeholders
• Ability to obtain TS/SCI clearance

Preferred Qualifications:
• Interest in or exposure to quantum computing concepts and quantum-resistant algorithms
• Experience with network automation tools and scripting
• Entry-level networking certifications (CCNA, Network+, or equivalent)
• Entry-level security certifications (Security+, or equivalent)
• Basic cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure)
• Physics or electrical engineering coursework with exposure to quantum mechanics principles
• Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, basic scripting)
• Firewall and network security device configuration experience
• Network monitoring and analysis tools experience (Wireshark, basic packet capture)
• Understanding of network protocols and troubleshooting
• Basic programming experience in Python or similar languages
• Active TS/SCI clearance

Additional Certifications:
• None required, but entry-level networking and security certifications preferred

Physical Demands:
• Must be able to be in the office 5 days a week
• Occasional lifting of networking equipment up to 50 lbs
• Ability to work in server rooms and data center environments
