University of Maryland, MD (On-Site/Office)
ORGANIZATION SUMMARY STATEMENT
The University of Maryland's Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Systems Engineer to support advanced research initiatives. This position is essential to enabling secure, scalable, and future-ready infrastructure supporting diverse mission-oriented projects. In addition to leading the development and integration of enterprise and cloud-based environments, the successful candidate will also contribute to exploratory efforts in quantum-enhanced computing and systems engineering. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in cloud architecture (AWS, Azure), high-performance computing (HPC), and Linux systems administration, with a working understanding of quantum information science (QIS) and its integration into secure research platforms.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design and Maintain Enterprise Systems – Apply proven systems engineering expertise to develop, optimize, and maintain complex enterprise-level and cloud-integrated architectures.
• Manage Linux and Cloud Environments – Oversee Linux system administration, automation, and orchestration; optimize environments using cloud-native and hybrid cloud platforms.
• Implement and Support Infrastructure – Design and manage scalable solutions for virtualization, cloud integration, and HPC environments; develop architectures compatible with future quantum-hybrid workflows.
• Quantum Systems Readiness – Collaborate with QIS researchers to prepare classical systems for integration with quantum accelerators, simulators, or hybrid interfaces as applicable.
• Enhance Security and Compliance – Monitor and respond to cybersecurity threats; enforce best practices in secure data and access management across cloud and on-prem systems.
• Collaborate and Problem-Solve – Lead technical discussions with interdisciplinary teams including software developers, data scientists, and security engineers.
• Technical Communication – Translate complex infrastructure and system topics for non-technical stakeholders; contribute to documentation, system design reviews, and compliance reports.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance. Final candidates will undergo a comprehensive investigation including verification of U.S. citizenship, background history, and financial standing in accordance with federal standards for classified access.
PREFERENCES
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
• Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert).
• Familiarity with quantum computing principles, quantum-safe security practices, or QIS-adjacent technologies.
• Hands-on experience with firewall systems, network encryption, or cloud-native security configurations.
• Background in electrical engineering or enterprise network design.
• Familiarity with quantum development frameworks (e.g., Qiskit, Cirq, or similar) or simulation environments.
• Active TS/SCI clearance preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sedentary work performed in a standard office environment. Must be capable of lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally and spending extended periods in front of a screen. In-person presence required at the office five (5) days per week. Occasional attendance at off-campus meetings and engagements may be necessary.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
None required. Relevant certifications are considered a plus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field.
• Experience: At least six (6) years of progressive, responsible experience in IT systems engineering, infrastructure deployment, or cloud architecture.
• Substitution: Additional relevant work experience may be substituted for up to four (4) years of education on a year-for-year basis.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Demonstrated expertise in Linux systems administration, scripting, and automation.
• Strong familiarity with enterprise cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), virtualization tools, and container orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
• Knowledge of HPC environments and parallel processing frameworks.
• Working knowledge of QIS concepts, quantum-safe algorithms, or hybrid quantum/classical architectures.
• Understanding of secure network architecture, firewall management, and encryption protocols.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Experience interpreting technical requirements and applying regulatory standards.
• Commitment to customer service and the ability to work effectively in a diverse, collaborative environment.
• Skilled in use of Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.) and other project collaboration tools.
ADDITIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION
This role reports directly to senior engineering leadership and will interface with research faculty, government sponsors, and ARLIS project stakeholders. The position offers opportunities to contribute to exploratory research in quantum computing integration and may support DoD-affiliated innovation initiatives. Travel may be required for conferences or government partner meetings. Eligible for professional development support and research engagement initiatives.
