Position Summary:
The University of Maryland's Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Systems Engineer to support cutting-edge research projects in quantum computing and quantum communications. This position involves the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex unclassified and classified quantum technology systems, secure networking infrastructure, and encryption protocols.

The role focuses on developing innovative solutions to assess and troubleshoot challenging national security problems requiring sophisticated computational infrastructure with emphasis on quantum-safe cryptography, secure network design, and advanced encryption systems. The engineer will design and implement quantum-ready network architectures, test and validate post-quantum cryptographic protocols, and ensure secure communications for sensitive research environments

Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Information Technology, or a related field with emphasis on networking and cryptography
• 3+ years of proven systems engineering experience in enterprise environments with focus on network design and security
• Expert-level Linux system administration and shell scripting expertise (bash, python)
• Advanced networking expertise including TCP/IP, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), VLANs, and network troubleshooting
• Strong encryption and cryptography background including symmetric/asymmetric encryption, PKI, and secure communication protocols
• Network design and testing experience including performance optimization and security validation
• Infrastructure implementation experience (virtualization, cloud platforms, HPC)
• Security monitoring, incident response, and vulnerability assessment knowledge
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Effective communication skills to interact with diverse groups of technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Ability to obtain TS/SCI clearance

Preferred Qualifications:
• Post-quantum cryptography experience and knowledge of quantum-resistant algorithms (NIST PQC standards)
• Quantum networking and quantum key distribution (QKD) system experience
• Advanced networking certifications (CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent)
• Cryptography certifications (CISSP, GSEC, or equivalent)
• Cloud platform certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert)
• Electrical engineering or physics background with understanding of quantum mechanics principles
• Experience with network automation and orchestration tools (Ansible, Terraform, SDN controllers)
• Firewall and network encryptor experience (Juniper, Cisco, Fortinet)
• Enterprise networking expertise with high-speed optical networks
• Network protocol analysis and packet capture experience (Wireshark, tcpdump)
• Experience in network performance testing and optimization
• Understanding of quantum computing architectures and quantum error correction
• Programming experience in Python, C++, or similar languages for network automation
• Active TS/SCI clearance

Physical Demands:
• Must be able to be in the office 5 days a week

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Core Technical Duties (50%)

Design and deploy secure, quantum-ready network architectures.

Implement and maintain high-speed, low-latency networks for quantum systems.

Configure and optimize network protocols for quantum communications.

Deploy and manage advanced encryption protocols and systems.

Implement quantum key distribution (QKD) systems.

Test and validate post-quantum cryptographic algorithms.

Design integrated quantum and classical computing environments.

Optimize system performance for quantum workloads.

Security Implementation and Testing (25%)

Manage classified and unclassified encryption systems.

Implement and maintain cryptographic key management infrastructure.

Conduct security assessments of quantum communication protocols.

Perform penetration testing and vulnerability assessments.

Monitor and respond to security incidents in quantum environments.

Develop and maintain security protocols and compliance frameworks.

System Administration (20%)

Manage and optimize Linux-based quantum computing platforms.

Automate system deployment and configuration management.

Maintain performance and reliability metrics.

Oversee virtualized and cloud-based quantum computing resources.

Implement backup and disaster recovery procedures.

Technical Collaboration and Documentation (5%)

Collaborate on research technology projects.

Develop system documentation and contribute to process improvement.
