Duties

  • Work primarily in the Operations and Safety Control Center outside the chemical storage area access control point that serves as a stationary guard post.
  • Prevent unauthorized or inadvertent entry into a chemical limited area that utilizes multiple overlapping protection systems and a pass and identification system.
  • Protect surety material, assigned and visiting personnel working in these protected areas.
  • Record all entries made into the laboratory (i.e. visitor's name and issued passes/badge number). Collect and account for all passes and badges issued.
  • Inspect the outer perimeter of the facility containing surety material with special emphasis on sensitive or vulnerable areas that surround the laboratory (i.e. chemical limited area).
  • Receive periodic instructions or drill, both, in regular and special security procedures in effect for the area guarded, including methods for observing and identifying persons.
  • Observe to detect any unusual or abnormal conditions, assess the situation, and institute emergency procedures by radio or telephone or direct action.
  • Act to prevent destruction/loss of property, protect people, or overcome and apprehend persons that precipitated the emergency.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • As a precondition and continuing condition of employment, the incumbent is required to submit to urinalysis testing under the Drug Abuse Testing Program in accordance with (IAW) AR 600-85.
  • Incumbent must be able to work under stressful situations.
  • May work under stressful situations with high noise levels, fumes and possible exposure to toxic substances.
  • Position requires clean shaven face to the extent there is no possible interference of any hair growth (beard, mustache) with the sealing of the protective facemask.
  • Incumbent will be required to wear chemical protective respirators.
  • Incumbent must be physically fit to perform duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must submit to pass a Physical Agility Test annually that consists of a 1.5 mile run in 17 minutes and 30 seconds and 19 push-ups in 2 minutes.
  • Incumbent must be able obtain and maintain a valid state's driver's license.
  • Required to carry firearms or other weapons authorized for their specific jurisdictions and required to qualify with assigned weapons IAW AR 190-56, to demonstrate skill/proficiency in their use.
  • Incumbent will be exposed to pepper spray.
  • This position supports and participates in the Chemical Incident or Mishap Response Assistance (CIMRA) Operations.
  • Incumbent must have and maintain Basic Life Support (CPR) Certification.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act 1968.
  • Persons convicted of a Misdemeanor crime of Domestic Violence are not eligible for this position.
  • This a testing designated position. Personnel are required to sign DA Form 5019-R (Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program).
  • Personnel must pass drug screening prior to hiring and will be subject to random drug testing on an unannounced basis.
  • In accordance with Army Regulation 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program (IRP) apply.
  • A Secret Clearance is required for this position.
  • One-year probationary period is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.) preventing unauthorized or inadvertent entry into highly restricted controlled protected area, 2.) issuing and accounting for all passes and badges to personnel and civilians entering or leaving the check in areas, and 3.) responding to security breaches with tactical equipment including an assigned weapon and chemical protective mask on a daily basis. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/ level position in the federal service (GS-4))

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
