Position Overview
We are seeking an Optical Structures, Thermal, and Mechanisms Manager to lead a team developing high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) products for missiles and space hardware. This role reports to the Optical Talent Center within the Space Engineering & Technology organization.
As the manager, you will lead a group of approximately 15 engineers delivering a portfolio that includes:
• Optical bench and electro-optic housing assemblies
• Thermal components and payload mechanisms (e.g., fast steering mirrors, filter wheels)
• Optical payload structures (e.g., telescope support structures)
You will work closely with architects, Fellows, and Payload Systems Engineering to align with roadmaps, establish maturation plans, and advise on make/buy decisions executing when a "make" decision is made.
Key Responsibilities
As the Optical Structures, Thermal, and Mechanisms Manager, you will:
• Partner with Lines of Business (LOBs) and Payload Systems Engineering to develop architectures enabling use of common products across programs
• Serve as the execution lead when LM "make" is selected supporting all phases from Engineering Units (EUs) through qualification and flight
• Transition low TRL products from R&D (e.g., from the ATC) into productized solutions, managing technical handoffs and maturation
• Propose and execute IRAD projects aimed at standardization and TRL advancement targeting high-TRL, commodity, or off-the-shelf solutions
• Strengthen strategic supplier relationships and collaborate with other LM Business Areas to complement in-house capabilities
• Translate mission needs into product roadmaps by partnering with Payload IPTs and LOB leaders to maintain a competitive edge
• Lead technical knowledge management efforts to ensure skill development, knowledge continuity, and career growth
• Manage staffing, sustain engineering capabilities, and preserve critical skillsets within the team
Basic Qualifications:
Skill Requirements:
• Proven experience managing teams and leading technical projects in aerospace or defense, focusing on optical systems, thermal management, and mechanical systems
• Strong engineering management background, with a Bachelor s degree in a technical discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related Engineering/Science fields)
• Demonstrated technical leadership including:
o Materials selection and application (aluminum, beryllium, Invar, titanium, composites) in optical, thermal, and mechanical systems
o System-level design and integration, including thermal management and optical system performance
o Mechanical systems, including mechanisms and structural components
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to work effectively with cross-functional teams, customers, and stakeholders
Security Clearance / Work Authorization:
• This position requires U.S. Citizenship to meet program/customer requirements
• Only candidates with an active Top Secret clearance will be considered; clearance is required prior to start
• Selected candidates must obtain and maintain Top Secret with adjudicated SCI Eligibility (TS/SCI) for long-term employment on this program
Desired Skills:
• 9 years of demonstrated technical expertise
• 3 years of hands-on experience in space or complex hardware/software systems
• Experience designing with various materials including Aluminum, beryllium, Invar, titanium, and composites
• Experience with cooled/cryogenic systems in visible and IR applications, including cryocoolers, dewars, radiators, heat pipes, phase change materials
• Experience with components featuring moving assemblies such as fast steering mirrors, gimbals, filter wheels, and shutters
• Experience establishing line-of-sight control for remote sensing instruments, payloads, or directed energy systems, including control algorithms and hardware
• Experience developing space qualification plans for components
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to communicate effectively
• Demonstrated ability to drive closure and resolve complex technical issues
• Broad customer exposure across business areas such as military, intelligence, science, and weather instrumentation
• Prior leadership roles with a proven record of leading teams to perform productively and foster cross-functional relationships

Schedule for this Position: 9x80 every other Friday off
Pay Rate: The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, Washington or Washington DC is $128,400 - $226,435. For states not referenced above, the salary range for this position will reflect the candidate's final work location. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
