Caribou Thunder is hiring a Senior Modeling & Simulation Engineer to lead cutting-edge scenario development efforts for missile defense and national security initiatives. Based in Renton, VA, this role offers the opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary team consisting of operational military and intelligence subject matter experts (SMEs), operations research analysts, modelers, and software engineers who conduct modeling, simulation, and analysis (MS&A) of emerging concepts for the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA) using advanced MS&A techniques and tools.
A Day in the Life – What You’ll Do
Design and implement advanced-level AFSIM scenarios, models, and behaviors to simulate real-world threats and defense responses
Participate in the definition and execution of study plans, instantiate simulation designs, run simulation experiments, analyze results, and create quality deliverables.
Must be able to work independently with little direction or guidance except in the most complex of situations.
Lead—and/or participate in—the conduct of studies for senior-level military decision makers, technology developers, and acquisition professionals for use in CONOPS development, force structure design, resource allocation, and targeted technology insertion.
Develop, implement, and execute an experiment design approach, identify key metrics for simulation output, analyze results, generate insights and information, and present findings to senior DoD leaders.
Conduct pre- and post-simulation analyses as needed.
Develop and/or instantiate platform and system models, model behaviors, and model hierarchies in the designated modeling & simulation (M&S) environment as needed
Integrate and optimize C++, Python, and SysML scripting to drive simulation realism and performance
Work directly with stakeholders in a classified environment, supporting defense readiness through innovative modeling strategies
Is This You?
7+ years of experience in modeling and simulation, operations research, or systems engineering
5+ years of hands-on experience using AFSIM with advanced-level scenario scripting
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, etc.)
OR Master’s + 5 years of relevant experience
Active Top Secret/SCI clearance required
Detail-oriented problem-solver who thrives in collaborative, high-stakes environments
Core Skills and Tools
Simulation & Frameworks:
AFSIM (Advanced Framework for Simulation Integration and Modeling)
Mission-Level Simulators: NGTS, OneSAF, ITASE
Other Simulation Tools: MATLAB/Simulink, STORM, MBSE
Programming & Technical Proficiency:
C++, Python, SysML (advanced scripting preferred)
Systems engineering and operational analysis principles
Agile development practices and DevSecOps familiarity
Requirements
Education:
Bachelor’s in a STEM field + 7 years relevant experience, or
Master’s + 5 years of experience
Clearance: Active TS/SCI required
Experience:
5 years minimum as an AFSIM user with advanced scenario scripting
Partial substitutions allowed (e.g., NGTS, OneSAF, STORM may qualify at 2:1 or 3:1 ratios)
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced proficiency in Python, C++, or SysML
