Software Engineer - Level 2

Location: Annapolis Junction, MD
Clearance: TS/SCI with Polygraph (required to start; no CCAs)

We are seeking a Software Engineer (SWE) to design, develop, integrate, and enhance complex software systems across mission‑critical programs. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong analytical skills, and the ability to lead development efforts within structured software engineering processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze user requirements to derive software design and performance specifications.
• Debug existing software, identify defects, and implement corrective actions.
• Recommend improvements to documentation standards and software development processes.
• Design, code, and enhance new or existing software to introduce new features or capabilities.
• Integrate existing software into new or modified systems and operating environments.
• Develop simple data queries for existing or proposed databases and data repositories.
• Write, review, and maintain software and system documentation.
• Serve as a team lead, guiding development activities in alignment with the project's software development process.
• Design or implement complex database interfaces and data repository queries.
• Develop and implement algorithms that meet or exceed system performance and functional requirements.
• Assist in developing and executing test procedures for software components.
• Develop software solutions by analyzing system performance standards, collaborating with users and system engineers, and evaluating system flows, data usage, and work processes.
• Modify existing software to correct errors, adapt to new hardware, or improve performance.
• Design, develop, and modify software systems using scientific analysis and mathematical modeling to predict and measure outcomes.
• Design or implement complex algorithms requiring strict adherence to timing, resource, or interface constraints.
• Perform quality control on team deliverables to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Implement recommendations to improve documentation and software development process standards.
• Oversee one or more software development teams to ensure work is completed according to project constraints and established processes.
• Collaborate with system and hardware engineers to derive software requirements and understand system limitations, performance expectations, and interface constraints.
• Coordinate software system installation and monitor equipment functioning to ensure operational specifications are met.

Minimum Qualifications

• Fourteen (14) years of experience as a Software Engineer supporting programs of similar scope, type, and complexity.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
• Four (4) additional years of SWE experience may be substituted for the degree.

Desired Skills (Knowledge and/or Experience)

• DevOps, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines in Git.
• Containerization and container management using Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, Rancher.
• Modern software languages such as Go/Golang and microservice architecture development.
• C++20 or newer based on Boost (2+ years).
• Java development (4+ years).
• Front‑end development using JavaScript, React, or similar frameworks.
• Python development (2+ years).
• Linux development environment experience (1+ year).
• Circuit‑switched and mobile telephony (5+ years).
• Reactor pattern architecture systems.
• Event stream processing system development.
• SQL databases such as MySQL and MariaDB, plus Elasticsearch.
• Dataflow tools and message queues.
• AI experience related to human‑language translation tools and techniques.
• RF algorithm development.
