Job Description
We are a federal IT company on a mission to make customer experience (CX) the center of every government solution.
Technology is our Passion. People are our Purpose.
We know tech, but we love people. NuAxis is home to thinkers and feelers, engineers and artists. We work hard and support each other along the way. Teamwork is more than just a buzzword for us, it's a state of mind.
We believe happy employees do amazing work, so join our team NOW! We are currently seeking a talented and motivated Senior UC Engineer for a full-time position.
Position Summary:
The Senior UC Engineer designs, maintains, and evolves the IRS enterprise Unified Communications (UC) environment - voice, video, and collaboration - supporting the User and Network Services (UNS) Division and its UC unit.
The IRS converged roughly 520 locations and 85,000 employees onto a Cisco-based UC platform. NuAxis, with Makpar, has provided engineering and program management for that environment since it moved to O&M in 2017. This role carries that work forward: keeping the current platform performing, retrofitting and decommissioning sites as the footprint changes, and helping plan the agency's move to its next generation of UC and collaboration.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Voice and collaboration engineering
• Design, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise dial plans, call flow, and call routing across a geographically distributed environment.
• Install, configure, and upgrade Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), voicemail, presence, and call recording platforms.
• Configure and maintain voice gateways, routers, switches, and virtual gateways that carry UC traffic on the converged network.
• Support the Government in UC architectural design, performance tuning, and integration of new solutions into the existing environment.
Video Relay Service (VRS) and video
• Integrate Video Communication Servers, endpoints, and supporting infrastructure into the converged network.
• Engineer and maintain VRS enhancements that serve employees who are deaf or hard of hearing, treating availability as a priority service.
Site projects and lifecycle
• Oversee voice network upgrades, migrations, retrofits, and deployments, coordinating and scheduling engineering teams so work finishes on time and aligns with program objectives.
• Engineer decommissioning for sites that consolidate, close, or relocate, including removing configurations and releasing assets.
• Support asset management so equipment is commissioned and decommissioned on schedule and records stay accurate.
• Plan remote hardware and communications facilities needed for new or changing sites.
Operations and problem management
• Provide Tier 3 troubleshooting for voice and video incidents, keeping downtime minimal.
• Lead root cause analysis on recurring or high-impact issues and implement preventive fixes.
• Execute configuration changes and upgrades through the program's change control process.
Modernization and technical leadership
• Evaluate options and contribute to roadmaps for the agency's next iteration of UC and collaboration.
• Act as senior technical point of contact for assigned workstreams, guiding and reviewing the work of other engineers, including teaming-partner staff.
• Provide regular project status updates to senior management, tracking performance metrics and progress with industry-standard reporting and project management tools, including inputs to Monthly Status Reports and program dashboards.
Documentation and knowledge transfer
• Create and maintain network diagrams, configuration guides, runbooks, and design documents.
• Develop and deliver training sessions for engineers and support personnel on enterprise-specific CUCM, router, switch, virtual gateway, and video configurations.
Required qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; four additional years of relevant experience may substitute.
• 10+ years of UC or voice engineering experience, with at least 5 years supporting large, geographically dispersed enterprise or federal environments.
• Hands-on expertise with Cisco CUCM, Unity Connection, IM and Presence, and voice gateways (CUBE, SIP, H.323, MGCP).
• Deep knowledge of enterprise dial plan design, call routing, and call admission control.
• Working experience with Cisco video infrastructure (Video Communication Server / Expressway) and video endpoints.
• Solid routing, switching, and QoS knowledge as it applies to voice and video on a converged network.
• Proven root cause analysis and Tier 3 troubleshooting on production UC systems.
• Experience leading voice upgrades, migrations, deployments, or decommissioning projects end to end, using standard project management and reporting tools.
• Clear written documentation skills and comfort briefing technical issues to Government and program leadership.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain an IRS background investigation.
Preferred qualifications
• Cisco CCIE Collaboration or CCNP Collaboration.
• 15+ years of experience supporting geo-diverse enterprise collaboration technology, which meets the IRS Key Personnel standard for the Contractor Voice and Collaboration Engineer role.
• Prior IRS, Treasury, or other large civilian agency UC experience.
• Experience with Video Relay Service or other accessibility-focused communications services.
• Exposure to cloud or hybrid collaboration platforms (Webex Calling, Microsoft Teams Phone) and migration planning.
• Familiarity with ITIL change, incident, and problem management.
• Scripting or automation for UC administration (Python, AXL/REST APIs, bulk administration).
