Job Description

Software Developer (On-Site, Secret Cleared)
Job Description
Join a highly specialized defense program team that designs, builds, and maintains mission-critical ballistic missile planning software in support of United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM). As a member of this program, you will work primarily on back-end development with some microservices and front-end components, contributing across the full software development lifecycle in a secure, classified environment. You will help implement innovative software solutions that support strategic mission planning and execution, directly impacting national security and strategic deterrence.

Responsibilities
Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance of mission-critical applications.
Develop, enhance, and maintain primarily back-end software components using the specified programming language to support ballistic missile planning and analysis tools.
Contribute to microservices-based architectures, including containerization and orchestration using technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Support front-end development efforts using modern web technologies, including JavaScript/TypeScript or similar, to integrate user-facing features with back-end services.
Work within an Agile development environment, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to plan sprints, refine user stories, and deliver incremental value.
Implement and maintain unit and integration tests to ensure software quality, reliability, and performance in a mission-critical environment.
Use modern development tools and integrated development environments (IDEs), such as Eclipse and VS Code, to write, debug, and optimize code.
Leverage configuration management and version control tools such as Git and GitLab to manage source code, branches, and collaborative development workflows.
Collaborate with other developers, testers, and stakeholders to integrate new features into existing systems and support both new capabilities and legacy software.
Participate in rework and enhancement of front-end components while also supporting legacy software modules as needed.
Contribute to DevOps/DevSecOps practices and pipelines, using tools and automation to improve build, test, and deployment processes.
Communicate effectively with technical team members, providing clear status updates, participating in design and code reviews, and helping resolve technical issues.
Operate within a secure, classified environment, following all security protocols and handling sensitive information appropriately.
Support a team structure that is split into multiple sub-teams, including front-end and legacy support, and adapt to evolving mission and program requirements.

Essential Skills
Demonstrated experience using the primary back-end programming language specified for this role.
Knowledge of the Agile software development process and experience working within Agile teams.
Understanding of unit and integration testing principles, including the use of relevant testing tools and frameworks.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with technical teams in a high-stakes environment.
Ability to work full-time, on-site in a secure facility in the Falls Church, VA area (supporting a Bellevue, NE–based mission environment as needed).
Current active U.S. Department of Defense Secret clearance.
Ability to support a development environment that is approximately 90% back-end development and 10% microservices and containerized workloads.
Comfort working in a structured, secure, and process-driven environment supporting USSTRATCOM mission systems.

Additional Skills and Qualifications
Full-stack developer experience, including both back-end services and front-end user interfaces.
Experience working in an Agile development environment beyond basic familiarity, including participation in sprints, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
Knowledge of DevOps/DevSecOps practices and tools, such as Ansible, Kubernetes, Docker, and related automation technologies.
Front-end development experience using modern frameworks and languages such as JavaScript or TypeScript.
Demonstrated use of integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Eclipse and Visual Studio Code for software development.
Experience with configuration management and version control tools, including Git and GitLab.
Experience supporting microservices architectures and containerized applications in secure environments.
Prior experience working on defense, aerospace, or other mission-critical systems is beneficial.
Ability to contribute effectively at different experience levels, with openings suitable for early-career through more experienced developers.

Work Environment
This role is 100% on-site with no remote flexibility, working in a classified area supporting USSTRATCOM. You will be part of a growing development team of approximately 18 members, with plans to expand to over 20, organized into two primary sub-teams focused on front-end rework and legacy software support. The environment follows an Agile development process, with regular ceremonies and close collaboration among developers, testers, and technical leads. You will primarily perform back-end development (around 90% of your time) in the designated programming language, with the remaining time focused on microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, and front-end technologies such as JavaScript/TypeScript. The team uses modern tools, including VS Code, Eclipse, Git, and GitLab, within a secure, process-driven setting. Work occurs in a controlled, classified facility where adherence to security protocols and appropriate professional attire is required, and interviews may be conducted either face-to-face on-site for local candidates or via secure video conferencing for non-local candidates.
