Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Storage Manager to lead and oversee physical and systemic storage operations at a large-scale Department of Defense (DoD) distribution facility. The Storage Manager will be responsible for ensuring that warehouse space is accurately configured, efficiently utilized, properly represented within the Warehouse Management System (WMS), and capable of supporting ongoing cargo inductions and distribution requirements.

This is a key warehouse leadership position requiring a strong understanding of DoD distribution operations, warehouse space management, WMS configuration, storage capacity, slotting, and material handling. The successful candidate will work closely with Government personnel to ensure physical warehouse configurations and systemic records remain synchronized and accurate.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive leadership and oversight of physical and systemic warehouse storage operations across the distribution center.
  • Manage the integrity and accuracy of the distribution center's warehouse spatial configuration, including storage locations, bin assignments, dimensions, capacities, and restrictions.
  • Supervise the creation, modification, maintenance, and retirement of systemic storage bin locations within the WMS.
  • Ensure WMS records accurately reflect the physical characteristics of storage locations.
  • Ensure physical warehouse locations are properly labeled, marked, and identified in accordance with applicable DLA requirements.
  • Enforce adherence to approved DLA naming conventions and storage-location schemas.
  • Serve as the primary contractor liaison with the Government Storage Analyst to coordinate and synchronize physical warehouse layouts with WMS configurations.
  • Ensure changes to warehouse configurations are accurately reflected on official warehouse planography drawings.
  • Monitor warehouse capacity, utilization, and storage density using WMS data and operational reports.
  • Analyze systemic utilization data to identify storage locations operating below established utilization thresholds, including locations with less than 50% volume density.
  • Plan, authorize, and direct re-warehousing operations to improve overall warehouse utilization and capacity.
  • Consolidate identical or similar materiel when appropriate to eliminate redundant storage locations.
  • Maximize volumetric storage density throughout the distribution center while maintaining safe and operationally effective storage configurations.
  • Optimize storage slotting to improve pick-cycle times and operational efficiency, particularly for high-demand and fast-moving materiel.
  • Strategically generate and maintain vacant storage locations to support new cargo inductions and anticipated workload requirements.
  • Coordinate storage moves with warehouse operations, inventory management, material handling, and other functional areas to minimize operational disruption.
  • Monitor storage capacity and identify emerging space constraints before they affect cargo induction or distribution operations.
  • Develop and implement storage plans that balance capacity, accessibility, safety, material characteristics, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of storage configurations, location changes, re-warehousing actions, and capacity-management activities.
  • Provide management with reports, metrics, and recommendations regarding warehouse utilization, storage density, available capacity, and future storage requirements.
  • Supervise, train, and develop warehouse personnel performing storage and material handling functions.
  • Ensure all storage operations comply with applicable DoD, DLA, safety, environmental, and contract requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in storage configuration, WMS accuracy, warehouse utilization, and material flow.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May have supervisory responsibilities to include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in DoD distribution and warehouse operations comparable in size, volume, and complexity to a large-scale distribution center.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct supervisory or managerial experience overseeing warehouse personnel and material handling operations.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience utilizing automated Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) within the past seven (7) years.
  • Demonstrated experience managing warehouse storage locations, capacity, space utilization, or related warehouse configuration functions.
  • Experience using WMS data to analyze warehouse utilization and support operational decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and direct re-warehousing, slotting, consolidation, and storage optimization activities.
  • Strong understanding of warehouse layout, storage capacity, material handling, and inventory control principles.
  • Ability to interpret and maintain warehouse layouts, storage-location data, and planography.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with Government representatives and multiple warehouse functional areas.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required DoD installation access, background investigation, or security credentials.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience supporting DLA Distribution or another DoD depot or distribution center.
  • Experience with DLA warehouse storage systems, storage naming conventions, and planography.
  • Experience managing large-scale warehouse capacity and volumetric storage density.
  • Experience with warehouse slotting and optimization of fast-moving/high-demand materiel.
  • Experience conducting or directing large-scale re-warehousing operations.
  • Experience developing storage plans to support significant increases in cargo induction volume.
  • Experience with hazardous material storage requirements and storage-location restrictions.
