MRC seeks an entry-level GIS Analyst I with knowledge of GIS systems and data management. This position is for GIS, mapping, data-management, and spatial-analysis work in support of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Division Newport Environmental Branch.
Duties:
• Create, edit, maintain, and quality-check GIS datasets, feature classes, geodatabases, web maps, and associated metadata.
• Produce maps, figures, exhibits, and other geospatial visualizations for NEPA documents, environmental planning studies, briefings, and public-review materials.
• Support spatial analyses related to proposed action areas and environmental resources
• Conduct quality assurance and quality control of GIS data and map products
• Maintain organized GIS project files, data inventories, map templates, and metadata in accordance with office procedures and records management requirements.
• Support preparation of technical memoranda, data summaries, map notes, and methodology descriptions for environmental planning documents.
• Support environmental planning beyond the GIS laboratory, including drafting and review of portions of environmental planning documents (e.g., environmental assessments, endangered species act consultations). Topic emphasis would prioritize areas within the individual’s areas of expertise.
• Collaborate with government staff and contractors to provide expertise on GIS-related questions or needs.
• Perform administrative duties, including tracking tasks and taking occasional trainings as required for Navy contractors.
Job Requirements
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must have or be able to obtain a Secret Security Clearance for access to classified material. MRC will orchestrate and fund the clearance process once a successful candidate is identified.
• Currently enrolled in, or have completed, a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in geography, GIS, environmental science, planning, natural resources, engineering, or a related field that included some GIS training. Equivalent training gained through employment is also acceptable.
• Basic knowledge of GIS principles, cartography, spatial data types, coordinate systems, projections, and map production.
• Experience using ESRI ArcGIS software, specifically ArcGIS Pro, including coursework or professional experience.
• Ability to create clear, accurate, and professional map products for technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
• Internship, academic, or professional experience supporting environmental planning, natural resources, or land-use planning.
• Basic experience with ArcGIS Online and/or Portal, dashboards, web mapping, Python/ArcPy, ModelBuilder, SQL, MATLAB, R, or remote-sensing tools.
• Familiarity with federal environmental planning processes and terminology, including the National Environmental Policy Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, or other federal environmental laws.
• Experience preparing maps for technical reports, regulatory submissions, or public-facing environmental documents.
• Knowledge of metadata standards and GIS quality-control practices.
