Job Description

Department: Operations
Location:
Alexandria,
VA
Workplace: Remote

Salary:
$140,000 - $165,000
Looking for a career where hard work is valued, and your ideas and feedback are part of the way we operate daily? Want to bring your skills to a company that encourages teamwork and champions continued education and process improvement?

Atlas Technologies, a veteran-owned IT company serving multiple DoD customers, is seeking a Service Transition Engineer to support our engineering team as they migrate a large, mission-critical customer application from manually managed virtual servers and databases to automated, infrastructure-as-code deployments on AWS GovCloud. We need someone who can ensure the delivered product is fully prepared for successful day-to-day operations once released. In this role, you will translate the engineers' work into the operational documentation that support teams depend on'such as administrator guides, runbooks, troubleshooting steps, recovery procedures, helpdesk scripts, and system diagrams. You'll collaborate closely with engineers and the customer to refine and align operational processes as the environment shifts from traditional, click-based workflows to DevOps practices, ensuring all components operate as a cohesive and reliable system. You will also maintain and update the documentation that keeps the transition progressing smoothly.

This role involves true engineering work, not simply technical writing or editing. You will review code and configurations, validate processes in a sandbox environment, and write initial documentation based on how the system operates. Ideal candidates have years of experience as systems administrators or operations engineers and were the go-to people whose runbooks the rest of the team relied on.

Travel up to 10%

You Will:

Write and maintain operational documentation based on what engineers have built or proposed
  • Work from the source. Read CloudFormation templates, pipeline definitions, scripts, and configurations directly, and go to the engineers to fill gaps rather than to have them dictate.
  • Validate procedures by running them in sandbox environments before deployment, proving the documentation work.
  • Work with engineers, assess how the system operates today, including provisioning, patching, change management, backup and recovery, and access management, and propose improvements to engineers, project managers, and customers.
  • Build handoff packages that let an operations team or an incoming contractor take over a system without depending on the engineers who built it.
  • Keep documentation current as systems change. Track changes through the team's Git workflow and change process and treat updated documentation as part of finishing the work.
  • Create diagrams and flowcharts that show operators how processes and systems behave.
  • Develop training and onboarding materials for operations staff adapting to new tools and processes.
  • Fold lessons from incidents and post-incident reviews back into runbooks.

You Have:
  • Must currently possess and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Level Security Clearance.
  • Hands-on Cloud, Windows and/or Linux systems administration, and other general IT operations experience. You've deployed and managed servers and applications, and worked an incident queue, and know why a process works or doesn't.
  • A general understanding of fundamental IT concepts that underline clouds such as compute, network, storage, and data services.
  • Working knowledge of AWS or Azure, and enough familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD to read a template or pipeline and explain what it does.
  • Comfort with the command line (PowerShell, Bash) and Git.
  • Experience with ITIL-style processes (incident, problem, change, knowledge management), and a practical sense of where they help and where they get in the way.
  • An ability to write clear, precise, tested, and organized documentation for someone working an outage under pressure.
  • The ability to interview engineers and customer staff, work out how things get done, and build agreement on how they should be done.
  • Patience and credibility with people adapting to new ways of working.

Education/Experience
  • 8+ years of IT operations, systems administration, or infrastructure support experience, or a bachelor's degree in a technical field plus 4+ years.
  • Experience writing operational documentation (runbooks, SOPs, admin guides) for production systems. Redacted writing samples are requested.
  • Experience supporting migration, modernization effort, or contract transition is strongly preferred.
  • DoD 8140 qualification for the assigned work role, or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire.
  • ITIL 4 Foundation is preferred.
  • An AWS or Azure associate-level certification, RHCSA, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with docs-as-code practices (Markdown, Git-based documentation) and with tools such as Confluence, SharePoint, Visio, draw.io, or Lucidchart.
  • DoD or federal experience is a plus.
