Job Description

At MITRE, your passion fuels work that impacts our nation and improves lives. This is where your skills strengthen national security, cybersecurity, health, transportation, and citizen services. We're a nonprofit engineering, applied research, and advanced technology organization working in the public interest. With objectivity and integrity at our core, we lead federally funded research and development centers for U.S. government agencies - collaborating with industry and academia to deliver integrated, high-impact solutions that advance our nation's health, security, and prosperity. Our people tackle the toughest technical challenges, supported by competitive benefits, meaningful career development, and a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. Choose MITRE for a career with purpose - and help shape the future.

The L614 - Intelligent Network Services Department within MITRE Technology and Engineering specializes in complex network challenges vital to national well-being. L614 supports large number of work programs. This requisition is for the MITRE Army Resilient C2 and Communications work program which drives the development of innovative capabilities addressing U.S. Army sponsors' most challenging problems.

The work program identifies and pursues innovative solutions through rapidly analyzing, experimenting, prototyping, applying state-of-the-art mission engineering, coupled with deep technical expertise and exquisite operational understanding. It works across the Army and with industry to mature critical tactical and enterprise C2, network, communications, and cyber capabilities with a focus on accelerating fielded capabilities.

A key part of the work program is enabling the successful development, experimentation, integration, and fielding of the Army's Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2). The work program is focused on providing capabilities through close collaboration with warfighters, prototyping to demonstrate concepts and refine requirements, exploring commercial and other existing government solutions that can be leveraged, integration of capabilities (e.g., sensors, EW, autonomy, C-UAS), and assisting the Army with applying agile acquisition approaches.

We are looking for a strong network engineer with technical leadership that can understand Army operations and design Army networks, as well as lead lab and field experiments to compare alternatives and make recommendations. Experience with tactical networks and enterprise networks is essential. The candidate should understand the important characteristics of networking components within the larger Army network, drive/lead lab assessments, gather relevant data, and make recommendations.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Design, integrate, and support tactical communications network architectures for Army operational environments, including command posts, mounted platforms, and expeditionary network infrastructures.
  • Develop and maintain IP-based network architectures utilizing routing, switching, software-defined networking (SDN), and transport technologies to support mission command and operational communications requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and trusted advisory support to government customers and military leadership regarding network architecture design, operational constraints, integration risks, and emerging technical solutions.
  • Analyze operational requirements, mission threads, and Army tactical workflows to ensure network architectures align with warfighter needs and operational objectives.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related technical field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience supporting Army tactical programs, communications systems, or defense integration efforts; or equivalent Army military experience through prior enlisted service.
  • Demonstrated experience engineering, configuring, integrating, and troubleshooting complex IP network architectures within tactical, enterprise, or DoD environments. Candidate should possess strong knowledge of routing, switching, segmentation, redundancy, and operational network design principles beyond basic networking concepts.
  • Experience supporting Army enterprise or operational networking organizations such as NETCOM, DISA, or tactical signal units.
  • Basic understanding of tactical transport technologies including satellite communications (SATCOM), line-of-sight (LOS) systems, and their impacts on network performance and operational architectures.
  • Understanding of Army operational planning processes, mission execution workflows, and warfighter communications requirements.
  • Must have an active Secret U.S Government issued Security Clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI U.S. Government issued Security Clearance. Per the U.S. Government's eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.
  • Position requires on-site support 4 days a week in Aberdeen, MD with travel to operational and test locations as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance or eligibility to obtain TS/SCI.
  • Prior U.S. Army Signal Corps experience through military service, government civilian service, or tactical communications contracting support.
  • Current or previous Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification.
  • Experience designing or supporting software-defined networking (SDN) implementations within tactical or enterprise environments.
