Position Overview

AI/ML Engineer to join team at USPTO. In this role, you will assist in developing and evaluating machine learning models, preparing datasets, implementing AI solutions, and supporting the integration of intelligent systems into applications. You will work closely with other AI/ML engineers and other professionals to solve business problems using modern artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.

There are 2 openings for the position; this opening is for the Senior position. The selected candidate's qualifications, relevant experience, and demonstrated capability. Typical leveling for this role is as follows:

Junior (0 to 4 years)

Mid-Level (5 to 9 years)

Senior (10+ years)

Core Responsibilities

• Collaboration: Work with clients, key stakeholders, as well as cross-functional teams.
• Technical Performance:
• Senior skills
  • Supervised fine-tuning, preference tuning, domain adaptation
  • Distributed GPU training
  • Quantization and inference optimization
  • Model serving and inference infrastructure
  • MLOps: CI/CD pipelines, model lifecycle management
  • Designing evaluation harnesses
  • Architecting agentic frameworks
  • Leading integration of AI systems into production applications
  • Mentoring junior engineers, driving technical decisions

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Experience:
  • Junior (0 to 4 years)
  • Mid-Level (5 to 9 years)
  • Senior (10 to 14 years)

• Technical Proficiency:

• Experience with Python, Javascript, Java
• Experience with AI coding harnesses or related methods for agentic software development
• Experience with LLM engineering such as prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or agentic frameworks
• Experience with MLOps concepts, including CI/CD pipelines, version control, and model lifecycle management.
• Experience collaborating in Agile development environments and using modern DevOps tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub).
• Experience with Amazon Bedrock or similar generative AI platforms
• Experience working with large language models and prompt engineering
• Experience with model evaluation and performance optimization
• Experience developing and integrating APIs
• Experience using AI-enabled development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar technologies

• Compliance: Obtain Public Trust

Preferred Expertise

• Experience with document-heavy or structured-data AI applications
• Experience with federal government IT systems or federal contracting
• Experience with semantic search or knowledge graph systems
• Familiarity with accessibility and compliance requirements (Section 508)
• Experience with Azure or AWS cloud platforms (beyond just Bedrock)
• Contributions to open-source ML projects
• Publications or presentations in AI/ML
