Job Description

Senior BI Developer (Apache Superset)

Job Description

This role leads the modernization of enterprise business-intelligence and reporting capabilities to Apache Superset in a secure cloud environment. You will design, develop, and sustain advanced dashboards and analytics, modernize legacy reporting (including SAP Business Objects), and provide technical leadership across Superset, SQL, data modeling, integration, performance, and security. The position supports a mission-critical logistics and transportation analytics program and requires strong expertise in Superset, relational databases, and secure cloud-based BI solutions.

Responsibilities

Lead the design, development, integration, testing, deployment, and sustainment of enterprise Apache Superset business-intelligence solutions.
Collaborate with product owners, functional analysts, logistics subject-matter experts, and end users to define reporting, analytics, visualization, and decision-support requirements.
Modernize legacy reporting capabilities, including SAP Business Objects where directed, to Apache Superset or other approved BI technologies while preserving required functionality.
Analyze legacy reports, prompts, calculations, filters, business rules, data dependencies, and workflows to ensure functional equivalence during BI modernization.
Design and build advanced Superset dashboards, charts, filters, calculated metrics, datasets, drill-downs, and reusable semantic-layer components.
Configure Superset metadata, database connections, caching, authentication, role-based access control, row-level security, dataset permissions, and dashboard access.
Validate calculations, data accuracy, and end-to-end functional equivalence between legacy and modernized BI solutions.
Develop and optimize complex SQL queries, joins, views, functions, materialized views, and analytics-ready database objects to support dashboards, reports, and downstream analytics.
Design reporting-oriented logical data models, semantic structures, views, and datasets required by Superset and related BI capabilities.
Integrate Superset with approved relational data platforms, including Oracle, PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora/RDS, and other authorized sources.
Coordinate closely with database and data-ingestion teams on data structures, refresh schedules, interfaces, lineage, dependencies, and data-quality controls.
Develop embedded analytics and API integrations and troubleshoot complex dashboard, SQL, connectivity, data-quality, access-control, caching, and performance issues.
Define Superset application, integration, data-access, scalability, and deployment requirements within the approved cloud architecture and DevSecOps processes.
Work with cloud and DevSecOps teams to implement and sustain Superset in containerized and AWS environments without directly managing the underlying platform.
Optimize dashboard load times, SQL and query performance, caching strategies, database connections, refresh behavior, and overall resource utilization.
Identify BI application, authentication, authorization, data-access, and integration risks and coordinate mitigations with cybersecurity, architecture, database, and cloud personnel.
Support applicable DoD cybersecurity, Risk Management Framework (RMF), software-assurance, STIG, GVT, GAT, release-validation, and technical-review activities for BI capabilities.
Maintain Superset code, SQL, configuration, dashboard exports, and deployment artifacts in Git and integrate BI changes into established GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
Lead BI design and code reviews and provide technical guidance on Superset, SQL, visualization, semantic-layer design, performance, security, and integration best practices.
Mentor mid-level developers and analysts and assist the team in resolving complex BI design, migration, integration, and performance challenges.
Prepare and maintain dashboard inventories, data-flow diagrams, interface specifications, technical designs, configuration guidance, release documentation, and operational runbooks.
Participate in Agile planning, demonstrations, and release activities to ensure BI capabilities align with program priorities and stakeholder needs.

Essential Skills

Active Secret security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one, as required by assigned duties and contract requirements.
Eight or more years of experience in business-intelligence development, software development, data analytics, data engineering, or a related technical field.
Demonstrated advanced experience designing, developing, deploying, and sustaining enterprise Apache Superset solutions.
Advanced experience with Superset dashboards, datasets, calculated metrics, filters, semantic-layer components, database connections, authentication, RBAC, and row-level security.
Advanced SQL skills, including complex queries, joins, functions, views, materialized views, data validation, and performance optimization.
Experience modernizing or migrating enterprise reporting and BI solutions while preserving business rules, calculations, security, and user functionality.
Experience with relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora/RDS, MySQL, SQL Server, or comparable platforms.
Experience designing and working with reporting-oriented data models and integrations.
Experience supporting Apache Superset in AWS GovCloud or another authorized DoD cloud environment and integrating Superset with Aurora/PostgreSQL and enterprise identity services.
Experience developing dashboards or analytics for transportation, logistics, cargo, passenger, readiness, asset-visibility, performance, or operational data.
Experience modernizing SAP Business Objects or other legacy enterprise BI/reporting capabilities to Apache Superset or comparable modern BI platforms.
Experience with Git and established CI/CD processes, including integration with GitLab or similar platforms.
Familiarity with cloud-hosted and containerized application environments.
Strong technical leadership, troubleshooting, documentation, analytical, and stakeholder-communication skills.
Knowledge of data lineage, metadata management, data quality, accessibility, visualization standards, RMF, and federal software-authorization processes.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Business Analytics, or a related technical discipline; equivalent directly relevant experience may be considered where permitted by the applicable labor category.
Ability to satisfy applicable DoD 8140/DCWF qualification and IGC Computing Environment Certification requirements when assigned to PWS activities carrying DCWF 628 Intermediate requirements.

Additional Skills and Qualifications

Experience with Python and Flask for Superset customization and integration.
Experience with REST APIs for embedded analytics and system integrations.
Experience with JavaScript, HTML, or CSS to enhance Superset user experiences and custom components.
Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes for containerized deployments.
Familiarity with Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS for orchestrating containerized workloads.
Familiarity with Terraform and AWS CloudFormation for infrastructure-as-code and automated environment provisioning.
Experience working with cloud and DevSecOps teams to support secure, automated BI deployments.
Experience with React.js and Spring Boot in modern web or microservices architectures.
Experience migrating databases and refactoring schemas to support analytics and reporting workloads.
Experience with embedded analytics patterns and integration into operational applications.
Ability to work effectively with logistics and transportation stakeholders and translate operational needs into BI solutions.

Work Environment

This position operates in a 100% remote work environment, offering flexibility in where you work while supporting a program that prefers candidates local to the Scott Air Force Base area for potential on-site collaboration when needed. You will work primarily with cloud-based technologies, including AWS environments such as AWS GovCloud, containerized platforms like Docker and Kubernetes, and orchestration tools such as Amazon ECS and EKS. Infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and AWS CloudFormation support automated deployments, while Git and GitLab CI/CD manage code, configuration, and release pipelines. The work focuses on secure, mission-critical BI capabilities for transportation and logistics, operating within DoD-compliant environments that follow RMF, STIG, and other cybersecurity and software-assurance standards. The schedule aligns with standard professional business hours, with collaboration conducted through remote communication and Agile ceremonies.
