Job Description
Systems Engineer – Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
Job Description
This Systems Engineer role focuses on model-based systems engineering for a portfolio of battlespace awareness products supporting a NAVWAR customer. You will use Cameo as the primary platform to create, integrate, and apply interdisciplinary digital models from concept through the entire product lifecycle. The position combines deep technical modeling work with highly collaborative systems engineering, connecting multiple products and development cycles into an integrated end-to-end capability.
Responsibilities
Lead systems engineering efforts for a portfolio of battlespace awareness products, ensuring end-to-end capability from signals collection devices through data processing to decision-maker dashboards.
Create, integrate, and apply interdisciplinary digital models of products from initial concept through the full product lifecycle using Cameo and other digital engineering tools.
Perform practical MBSE to develop technical specifications, interface control documents, and system architectures that support complex DoD and government systems.
Develop architectures that integrate MBSE tools, simulation environments, data repositories, and lifecycle management systems into a cohesive digital engineering ecosystem.
Build and maintain models and views aligned to major program milestones, including Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), and Test Readiness Review (TRR).
Trace signals through the entire system path, applying true white-box modeling techniques to understand and document system behavior and interactions.
Define and maintain the enterprise architecture for the digital engineering ecosystem, ensuring consistency and traceability across products and development cycles.
Analyze and translate system requirements into robust designs that connect multiple NAVWAR products and enable coordinated development and capability delivery.
Apply advanced technical skills and full industry knowledge to develop innovative solutions to complex systems engineering problems.
Work with limited direction while independently planning and executing tasks, delivering high-quality engineering products and documentation.
Mentor and supervise team members, sharing MBSE best practices and supporting their professional growth in digital engineering.
Collaborate closely with government clients, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC), and associate contractor teammates to achieve program goals.
Identify, analyze, and resolve technical risks and issues, and develop clear technical reports and recommendations.
Work within agile workflows to meet deliverables, iterating on models and architectures in response to stakeholder feedback and evolving program needs.
Contribute to the growth of the battlespace awareness portfolio from six products to a larger set, ensuring that development cycles are coordinated and mutually supportive.
Balance your time between modeling and broader systems engineering activities, with an initial focus of approximately 60% modeling and 40% learning and communication, expected to grow toward 80% modeling and 20% other activities.
Shape the customer mission by designing, developing, and evolving systems with advanced technology solutions that support future mission areas and system types.
Essential Skills
2+ years of experience developing or defining architectures that integrate MBSE tools, simulation environments, data repositories, and lifecycle management systems.
2+ years of experience performing systems engineering analysis and developing systems engineering products for DoD or government systems.
2+ years of experience with practical MBSE for the development of technical specifications, interface control documents, and system architecture.
Hands-on experience using digital engineering tools such as Cameo (primary platform), MagicDraw, SparxEA, DOORS, or IBM Rhapsody.
2+ years of experience analyzing and translating system requirements into system and subsystem designs.
Experience building models and views aligned to PDR, CDR, and TRR milestones.
Ability to define and maintain the enterprise architecture for a digital engineering ecosystem.
Experience with UAF modeling and true white-box modeling, including tracing signals through an entire system path.
Ability to communicate effectively and establish collaborative relationships with government clients, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC), and associate contractor teammates.
Strong systems engineering foundation, including experience with systems engineering analysis and product development for complex, multi-product environments.
TS/SCI clearance.
Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or 4+ years of experience with MBSE.
Additional Skills and Qualifications
Experience with Model-Based Verification and Validation.
Experience with Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA).
Knowledge of Systems Modeling Language (SysML).
Knowledge of DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF).
Ability to work effectively within agile workflows to meet program deliverables.
Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve technical risks and issues, and to develop clear technical reports.
Ability to collaborate with government stakeholders and other partners to implement recommended solutions.
Master’s degree in Engineering.
OMG Certified Systems Model Professional (OCSMP) certification.
INCOSE Systems Engineering (SE) certification.
Familiarity with NAVWAR products and enterprise-level battlespace awareness tools.
Work Environment
This role supports a NAVWAR customer and focuses on a portfolio of battlespace awareness products within a digital engineering ecosystem. Cameo is the primary modeling platform, complemented by tools such as MagicDraw, SparxEA, DOORS, and IBM Rhapsody, as well as MBSE, simulation, data repositories, and lifecycle management systems. Work is highly collaborative, involving frequent interaction with government clients, FFRDC partners, and associate contractors, and follows agile workflows to meet evolving deliverables. The position is based in the United States, with worksite in California, and includes some travel to events in Virginia on a quarterly basis. The environment emphasizes professional communication, rigorous systems engineering practices, and coordinated development across multiple products and capabilities.
