This role provides a significant growth opportunity for an experienced cloud engineer to work within a modern cloud ecosystem, apply cutting-edge technologies, and serve as a trusted technical advisor to the customer.

The Cloud Comp Engr Principal will design, deploy, operate, secure, and optimize AWS GovCloud-hosted infrastructure, applications, and services within the VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC). The ideal candidate will work effectively at scale and with autonomy; possess deep AWS architecture, automation, security, and DevOps expertise; and collaborate with product teams, application engineers, security personnel, and VA stakeholders to deliver secure, compliant, highly available cloud solutions.

Job Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain data-flow diagrams, cloud-infrastructure diagrams, transition diagrams, high-level architecture diagrams, and other technical documentation for cloud-hosted applications, systems, and services.
  • Design, develop, deploy, and operate automation technologies supporting continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) processes.
  • Design and implement scalable, secure, highly available AWS cloud solutions that address application migration, modernization, and cloud-readiness requirements.
  • Provide cloud support services for systems and applications hosted within VAEC AWS GovCloud environments.
  • Configure, provision, and support VAEC environments for product lines and services, including application setup, cloud configuration, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Manage cloud-service-provider permissions for hosted applications, data storage, infrastructure, and services in accordance with least-privilege and role-based-access-control principles.
  • Implement, manage, and enhance monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability capabilities for cloud architecture, cloud-hosted systems, and applications.
  • Monitor cloud-hosted environments to ensure optimal availability, performance, security, compliance, and data integrity.
  • Design and implement cloud security controls, including identity and access management, encryption, key management, security monitoring, and network-protection capabilities.
  • Provide cloud security provider documentation and maintain technical artifacts necessary to support VA and Federal compliance requirements.
  • Support compliance with VA Integrated Product Team (IPT), development, release, and documentation requirements, including applicable VIP processes.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code solutions using AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS CDK, or comparable technologies.
  • Implement and support multi-account AWS environments using AWS Organizations, including account governance, access management, service controls, and centralized logging.
  • Design and manage AWS networking components, including VPCs, subnets, routing, VPC peering, Direct Connect, VPN connectivity, security groups, and network access controls.
  • Configure and optimize AWS services, including EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, Lambda, IAM, CloudFormation, CloudWatch, and Route 53.
  • Support containerized and orchestrated workloads using Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, and Amazon EKS.
  • Troubleshoot complex cloud-related incidents involving infrastructure, applications, databases, networking, security, performance, capacity, and deployment pipelines.
  • Identify and implement cloud cost-management, resource-right-sizing, and performance-optimization strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and knowledge transfer to junior engineers and cross-functional team members.
  • Lead technical projects and collaborate with product, application, DevSecOps, security, infrastructure, and customer teams to deliver timely, high-quality cloud solutions.
  • Participate in on-call support, emergency maintenance, and incident-response activities as required.
  • Remain current on emerging AWS capabilities, cloud engineering tools, security practices, and industry trends; recommend practical improvements to strengthen platform maturity and delivery outcomes.

Required Skills
  • Minimum of eight years of cloud-engineering experience, with a strong focus on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Proven experience designing, deploying, operating, and managing AWS infrastructure, applications, and cloud services.
