The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation (CMEI) advances America’s critical minerals supply chains and accelerates next-generation energy technologies to strengthen energy security. CMEI is comprised of three technical pillars and an operations pillar, which is designed to provide the foundational infrastructure required to execute the programs in the technical pillars successfully.
• Office of Critical Minerals, Materials, and Manufacturing (CM3).
• Office of Energy Technology (E-Tech).
• Office of Innovation, Affordability, and Consumer Choice (IACC).
• Office of Operations (OPS).
About the Role:
The Workspace Planning and Tracking Specialist will provide technical support for CMEI’s Organizational Readiness Office in workspace planning, asset tracking, and coordination activities, as well as maintaining and enhancing existing floor plans, datasets, and tracking tools. This includes ensuring alignment between physical space, workforce occupancy, associated assets to support informed planning, day-to-day management, and response to organizational needs. The position requires past work experience in office workspace planning and tracking and strong technical skills in Excel, Visio, Microsoft Power BI, and AutoCAD. The focus of the position is the logistical, database, and asset-tracking side of workspace operations. For instance, building interactive dashboards using Microsoft Power BI to visualize occupancy rates, vacancies, and seat utilization trends for CMEI leadership.
Responsibilities:
The position will have responsibilities in the following areas:
• Maintain accurate and current floor plans, occupancy information, and asset records to support effective space planning and management.
• Support collection, organization, and maintenance of space-related information needed for project, portfolio, and program-level planning activities.
• Enhance and sustain tracking tools and related resources used to monitor physical space, occupants, and assets across CMEI facilities.
• Provide recurring and ad hoc reporting, analysis, and insights to support space-related decision-making and stakeholder requests.
• Support coordination of space changes, realignments, and related updates to ensure information remains complete, consistent, and usable.
• Improve the accessibility and reliability of space and asset information used by CMEI leadership and staff.
• Assist in project, portfolio, and program-level data collection and assimilation efforts related to cost, performance, deliverables and milestones for existing and new databases.
• Support development of new database tools and platforms associated with new tracking and reporting requirements.
• Support responses by CMEI’s Organizational Readiness Office to both internal and external stakeholder data requests.
• Conduct routine, in-person floor walk-throughs to reconcile physical reality against database and CAD/Visio records.
• Conduct quarterly physical space audits across CMEI suites to verify seat occupancy, asset locations, and workstation configurations against official tracking records.
• Monitor and analyze workspace utilization trends (e.g., hot-desking, dedicated seating, telework ratios) to recommend space optimization strategies to management.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, business administration, public administration, management information systems, or information technology.
• Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in workspace planning, asset tracking, and coordination activities.
• Ability to work onsite in DOE’s Headquarters Office in Washington DC at least two days a week and BGS-DC or home office when not onsite at DOE.
• Demonstrated extensive experience using Excel, Visio, and Microsoft Power BI.
• Experience with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or BIM (Building Information Modeling).
• Proven ability to develop phased move plans, schedule dependencies (e.g., "Person A must move before Person B can occupy Space C"), and coordinate move logistics.
• Ability to effectively engage with government staff and execute their workspace-related requests.
• Basic understanding of modular/systems furniture layouts, demountable walls, power/data port placement, and ergonomics.
• Familiarity with federal workplace standards (e.g., GSA space utilization metrics, telework/hoteling ratios) desired.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Successful drug screening.
• Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.
