Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer - Undersea Systems

Location: Annapolis, MD
Work Arrangement: On-site
Schedule: 9/80
Clearance: Active DoD Secret clearance required, with ability to obtain TS/SCI with CI polygraph
Citizenship: U.S. citizenship required

Position Overview

We are seeking a Principal or Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, integration, and testing of specialized mechanical hardware for undersea systems.

This role focuses on mechanical hardware design, engineering problem-solving, and transitioning designs into manufacturing. The engineer will translate customer requirements into practical engineering solutions while balancing technical performance, schedule, cost, and production needs.

The ideal candidate has hands-on hardware design experience, understands design for manufacturing, and can develop the engineering documentation and processes needed to support small- to medium-volume production.

Responsibilities

Develop mechanical concepts and design solutions for undersea hardware and systems.

Translate customer requirements into engineering designs that meet technical, cost, and schedule constraints.

Support detailed design, hardware integration, and testing.

Apply design for manufacturing principles to ensure hardware can be produced efficiently and reliably.

Develop engineering processes, procedures, and documentation supporting manufacturing and production.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to solve complex technical problems.

Coordinate design activities across multiple projects and competing priorities.

Support hardware development throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development through production and testing.

Evaluate design approaches and identify opportunities to improve performance, manufacturability, and production processes.

Communicate technical findings, design decisions, and project status to engineering and program stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications

Principal Mechanical Engineer:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related STEM field with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience.

Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related STEM field with at least 8 years of relevant experience; a master's degree with at least 6 years; or a Ph.D. with at least 4 years.

Additional requirements for both levels:

Experience with mechanical hardware design and development.

Proficiency with common engineering design, production, analysis, and office tools.

Active U.S. Government Secret clearance.

Ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance with CI polygraph.

Ability to work on-site at the Annapolis, MD campus.

Strong technical problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience designing undersea vehicles, undersea hardware, or related systems.

Proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter.

Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

Knowledge of design for manufacturing and production processes.

Experience developing engineering documentation, procedures, and processes for manufacturing.

Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Active TS/SCI clearance with CI polygraph.

This opportunity is suited for a mechanical engineer with practical hardware design experience who can take engineering concepts through development, integration, testing, and manufacturing. Candidates with undersea system experience, strong CAD skills, and a design-for-manufacturing background are encouraged to apply.
