Job Description

Job Description

BAE Systems is seeking an Electrical Engineer with 3 to 6 years of experience to support the design, integration, qualification, production, and sustainment of the AN/SPN-50(V)1 Shipboard Air Traffic Radar (SATR) system. The AN/SPN-50(V)1 provides shipboard air traffic control surveillance capability for aircraft identification, sequencing and separation, airspace containment, safety alerting, weather processing, and landing guidance in naval aviation environments.
The selected engineer will apply practical electrical engineering experience across RF and radar performance assessment, digital signal processing, target identification parameters, electrical power interfaces, thermal and environmental stability, built-in test, diagnostics, reliability metrics, and system-level verification. The role requires close collaboration with systems, RF, software, mechanical, manufacturing, test, quality, supplier, and naval integration teams to deliver a rugged, reliable, maintainable shipboard radar capability for demanding maritime operations.
The successful candidate is a detail-oriented electrical engineer who can work independently while collaborating effectively across disciplines. They are comfortable moving between RF performance analysis, digital signal processing, electrical power interfaces, environmental stability, diagnostics, reliability assessment, integration, test, production support, and shipboard constraints. They bring strong engineering judgment, practical problem-solving skills, curiosity, and a commitment to delivering reliable radar capability that supports naval aviation operations.
The work environment is a rapid development environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers who designs, develops, evaluates, verifies, and provides in-service engineering support for the Navy's Aircraft Launch and Recovery system. This position may require travel in support of system product installation, system operation verification and testing, and certification.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support electrical engineering design, integration, verification, and sustainment activities for radar receiver, transmitter, exciter, timing, signal processing, control, power distribution, and diagnostic subsystems.
  • Evaluate RF and radar performance parameters such as detection sensitivity, dynamic range, noise figure, signal-to-noise ratio, clutter rejection, range and azimuth accuracy, track quality, latency, stability, and false alarm performance.
  • Support digital signal processing implementation and verification, including waveform processing, filtering, pulse compression, clutter mitigation, Doppler processing, target extraction, data conditioning, and algorithm-to-hardware integration.
  • Assess identification and surveillance parameters associated with aircraft detection, target classification support, track correlation, interrogation interfaces, message timing, data quality, and air traffic control display outputs.
  • Analyze electrical power requirements, power conversion behavior, grounding and bonding, load profiles, power quality, transient response, electromagnetic compatibility, and shipboard interface constraints.
  • Support thermal, environmental, and electrical stability evaluations for radar electronics operating under shipboard temperature, humidity, vibration, shock, salt-fog, electromagnetic, and sustained-duty-cycle conditions.
  • Develop and review diagnostic approaches, built-in test coverage, fault isolation logic, health monitoring data, calibration methods, maintenance indicators, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Collect, analyze, and communicate reliability and maintainability metrics, including failure trends, mean time between failure, mean time to repair, availability drivers, sparing impacts, and corrective action effectiveness.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation, including electrical interface control documents, test procedures, verification matrices, analysis reports, failure investigation summaries, change packages, and technical review materials.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, manufacturing teams, quality teams, test organizations, and customer stakeholders to transition electrical designs and radar performance updates from concept through production, installation, and field support.

This position is located in scenic and historic Southern Maryland in the St. Mary's County Technology Corridor adjacent to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.

There is no monetary relocation assistance budgeted for this position. Applicants must be currently residing in or state willingness to relocate self to St. Mary's County, Maryland or surrounding areas.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • 3 to 6 years of relevant electrical engineering experience supporting defense, aerospace, maritime, radar, RF sensor, signal processing, power electronics, or ruggedized electronics programs.
  • Working knowledge of RF and radar fundamentals, including signal propagation, receiver sensitivity, dynamic range, noise, interference, calibration, clutter environments, target detection, and tracking performance.
  • Experience supporting digital signal processing development, integration, or verification using MATLAB, Simulink, Python, C/C++, VHDL, FPGA workflows, embedded processing, or equivalent tools and methods.
  • Familiarity with aircraft identification, surveillance, tracking, data fusion, timing, interface control, message formatting, or air traffic control sensor data products.
  • Experience evaluating electrical power interfaces, power conversion, grounding, bonding, EMI/EMC, transient behavior, electrical safety, and power quality for complex electronic systems.
  • Ability to interpret environmental qualification results and assess electrical performance stability across temperature, humidity, vibration, shock, salt-fog, electromagnetic, and shipboard operating conditions.
  • Ability to develop and present performance analyses, diagnostic results, reliability findings, design risks, and technical recommendations to multidisciplinary engineering and program stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical documentation and collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, supplier, and customer teams.
  • Excellent skills in Math and Physics.
  • Excellent MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, etc.).
  • Team player with a proactive attitude, the ability to be productive in a dynamic/collaborative environment (e.g., open seating arrangement).

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Experience with shipboard radar systems, naval air traffic control systems, surveillance sensors, tactical data interfaces, aircraft carrier or amphibious ship installations, or Navy environmental qualification processes.
  • Knowledge of military and maritime electrical design considerations, including EMI/EMC, grounding and bonding, topside RF environments, spectrum constraints, shock, vibration, corrosion, maintainability, logistics, and shipboard survivability.
  • Experience with radar performance testing, target detection and tracking evaluation, clutter and interference analysis, calibration, field data review, or range-test data reduction.
  • Hands-on experience supporting laboratory integration, environmental testing, production troubleshooting, supplier issue resolution, ship checks, installation planning, or field support for radar or RF electronics.
  • Familiarity with built-in test, health monitoring, fault isolation, reliability growth, maintainability analysis, failure review boards, corrective action tracking, or sustainment engineering metrics.
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering, requirements management, digital thread implementation, multidisciplinary simulation, configuration management, or integrated digital review workflows.
  • RF, radar, and signal analysis tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, Python, NumPy/SciPy, LabVIEW, Keysight ADS, SystemVue, or equivalent.
  • Electrical design and verification tools such as SPICE, Altium, OrCAD, Zuken, Mentor Graphics, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, logic analyzers, signal generators, and power analyzers.
  • Embedded, FPGA, and processing workflows using C/C++, VHDL, Verilog, real-time data acquisition, timing analysis, interface simulation, version control, and automated test scripting.
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), requirements, and configuration tools such as DOORS, Cameo, Jira, or equivalent.
  • Engineering methods including requirements traceability, verification planning, failure mode analysis, reliability and maintainability analysis, root cause and corrective action, interface control, technical risk management, and design-to-cost trade studies.
