Legal Assistant II - Hybrid | Phoenix, AZ
PR: $18.66 /Hr. - Temp-to-Hire
Shift: 8-5; M-F. Mainly virtual, requires in-person attendance 4 Days per Month

About the Job
Support Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) at the Department of Economic Security's Appellate Services Administration (ASA). Help process appeals, prepare hearing materials, and meet legally mandated deadlines across programs involving benefit eligibility and overpayments, provider licensing and certification, and claimant fraud.
Key Responsibilities
• Verify incoming appeals, review case documents, determine hearing-request timeliness, and register additional issues as needed.
• Identify and retrieve accurate exhibits; create hearing packets for ALJs and parties.
• Ensure appeals meet federal and state noticing deadlines; identify and correct errors and obtain missing documents.
• Enter case notes and documentation into appropriate repositories and upload legal decisions and dispositions.
• Schedule hearings and assist customers with elevated docket calls.
• Process postponements, withdrawals, and other requests from parties and ALJs.
• Research case issues and elevate appeals to the Board of Appeals when appropriate.
• Maintain confidential paper and electronic files and follow security and confidentiality procedures.
Required Qualifications
• Strong computer skills and ability to use multiple programs simultaneously.
• Ability to perform detailed, repetitive work accurately and efficiently while managing competing priorities and deadlines.
• Strong research, critical-thinking, organization, communication, and customer-service skills.
• Ability to analyze complex or conflicting information, work with minimal supervision, and handle sensitive data.
• English proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing.
• Knowledge of Google Apps, including Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, and Adobe Acrobat.
Preferred Qualifications
• Legal experience.
• Familiarity with Arizona Public Assistance and Unemployment Insurance laws, practices, and procedures; the Administrative Procedures Act; and case-management systems such as APS, Clear2There, Guide mainframe, HEAplus, AZTECS, and CACTUS Portal.
