The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. - Your primary responsibility will be to perform data and software engineering enabling analysis of autonomous platform performance. This is to include requirements development, object-oriented design, data modeling, software development, laboratory system integration and testing, data pipeline development, and field testing.
- You will install and configure crucial analysis capabilities at APL, in the field, and within government cloud systems. This includes unique opportunities to understand the growing area of maritime autonomous systems.
- You will propose and develop innovative ways to apply cutting-edge technologies to extend the capabilities and performance of existing naval systems.
- You will document data and software engineering activities enabling the documentation of experimental test results, prepare for and conduct periodic design reviews, as well as, technical reports and other briefing materials for presentation to sponsors.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Have 2+ years of relevant experience in data and software engineering using Python, C#, or JavaScript, including frameworks such as Angular or React, in highly virtualized, Linux-based cloud environments.
- Communicate effectively with staff and clients at all levels.
- Are willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret-level security clearance by your start date and ultimately obtain a Secret-level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have an M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
- Have four or more years of experience developing software for vehicle performance assessment and analysis within distributed systems environments.
- Have expertise in data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines, cloud data warehouses and lakehouses, orchestration tools, and distributed or streaming systems, as well as experience with Git, Docker, infrastructure as code, data quality and testing, security and governance, and monitoring.
- Have demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business teams.
- Have experience developing and deploying cloud-ready software in containerized environments using technologies such as Docker, Podman, or Kubernetes.
- Have experience with full-stack software development.
