Location: Must live within 100 miles from Lexington, MA

About the Role:


Aquila Technology is seeking an CAD Designer to join its team in support of one of the nation’s premier defense research organizations. The team is seeking an experienced Senior optical/Mechanical Designer in the design, fabrication, integration and test of advanced sensor systems. The expert Designer will work in small teams on a variety of short duration (6-18 month) projects, interfacing with other subject matter experts across the company and provide complex and innovative solutions for rapid prototypes. This position must be able to create, design, oversee and coordinate the development of sensor/system components including electronics, thermal, mechanical, and optical systems. The team is looking for someone with a minimum of 5 years of experience, but ideally someone would have 8+ years of experience.


Must Have 5+ Years of experience with the following:


  • Degree Level: Bachelor’s Degree

  • Computer-Aided Design

  • Device Design

  • AutoCAD

  • CAD/EDA/TCAD

  • CATIA

  • Computer-Aided Manufacturing

  • Process and Device TCAD

  • Solidworks 3D Computer-Aided Design(CAD)



Nice to Have


  • Mechanical – Opto



Responsibilities:


  • Develop complex designs for the optimum performance and ease of fabrication, assembly and testing of complex imaging systems, thermal systems packaging solutions, novel materials and innovative mechanisms

  • Experience with a wide range of platforms (i.e. manned/unmanned vehicles, aircrafts, ships, spacecrafts)

  • Experience with the design and modeling of mechanical enclosures, optical assemblies with an understanding of requirements needed for Mounting/adjustment/actuation, alignment & measurement techniques, precision bearing, gearing & drive systems, structural/thermal analysis and environmental testing.

  • Must be able to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment

  • Should demonstrate good written and oral communication skills.



Required Skills:


  • 10+ years experience in Mechanical Design Mechanical CAD experience (Solid Works or other CAD software) Vast experience with mechanisms and complex mechanical assemblies.

  • Experience with design, analysis and documentation of opto-/mechanical subsystems and components

  • Familiarity with various fabrication techniques like machining, sheet metal, etc

  • Familiarity with thermal analysis and structural analysis

  • Familiarity with Optical systems and the design of EO/IR systems



Preferred Skills:


  • Opto-mechanical experience is highly preferred. Candidates with this experience will stand out.

  • Experience with various fabrication techniques like machining, sheet metal, etc

  • Experience with military standards, mil spec components

  • Experience with thermal analysis and structural analysis

  • Experience with Optical systems and the design of EO/IR systems

  • Experience with coordinating and executing system performance testing

Team members must achieve a grade of “B” or better to qualify for reimbursement.Aquila will reimburse up to $5,000 per fiscal year for tuition expenses only. Expenses related to training programs, certifications, books, materials, meals, transportation, or other non-tuition costs are not eligible under the Tuition Reimbursement Program. All tuition reimbursement requests must be submitted to and approved by the team member’s Manager prior to course registration. Reimbursement will be issued upon successful course completion and submission of final grades and proof of payment.


401K with Principal – Eligible to participate day 1 of employment. Company match on employee contributions:


• Eligibility on date of hire
• Employer Match- 100% of first 3% and 50% of next 2%
• Vesting- 100%
• Contribution limit- $24,500
• Catch-up contribution limit- $8,000
• Catch-up contribution limit for ages 60-63 in calendar year- $11,250
• Catchup contributions must be directed to Roth bucket if earned over
$150k in 2025


Cell Phone & Internet Reimbursed up to $150 monthly to cover cell phone, data, and home internet expenses. Aquila Technology will reimburse team members who work from home ONLY for cell phone/mobile device fees for work-related communications and/or operations each month. Employees eligible for this benefit must work remote 2 days a week or more to qualify.


Buy Your Own Device (BYOD) – Team members are eligible for reimbursement of up to $1,500 every three (3) years for the purchase of electronic equipment used to access corporate services. To qualify for this benefit, employees must have completed a minimum of six (6) months of employment and must agree to and sign the Device Minimum Configuration Form prior to reimbursement. Electronic devices eligible under the Buy Your Own Device (BYOD) program are limited to cell phones, laptops, and tablets.


Clearance Level -Candidate must be able to obtain an Active Secret Clearance – Must be US Citizen


Interview process – will consist of a phone screen followed by an extensive zoom interview with the team members.


Location/Work Schedule – This person has some flexibility to work remote depending on the specific project work, but will be required in the office at least 3-4 days a week. If this person was not originally local to MA, they would need to relocate for the start of this position.
