Job Description
Systems Engineer Level 4 – Ground Systems Software & MBSE
We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer Level 4 to support the development and integration of next-generation satellite ground systems. This role serves as the critical link between mission stakeholders, spacecraft engineers, and software development teams, translating operational needs into software capabilities that enable mission success.
Rather than functioning as a traditional software developer, the Systems Engineer will define requirements, develop system architectures, create MBSE artifacts, manage interfaces, and lead verification activities to ensure ground segment software meets customer and mission objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Translate mission and customer requirements into software requirements, user stories, use cases, interfaces, and acceptance criteria.
Develop and maintain MBSE artifacts using SysML and Cameo, including activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, state machines, interface definitions, and architecture models.
Collaborate closely with Agile software development teams during sprint planning, backlog refinement, feature decomposition, and design reviews.
Define and manage software interfaces, APIs, schemas, data exchanges, and communication protocols across ground system components.
Support system architecture development for satellite command and control, telemetry processing, mission planning, resource scheduling, and fault management capabilities.
Lead system integration, verification, and validation efforts, ensuring traceability from requirements through testing and operational acceptance.
Develop verification procedures, test scenarios, and qualification plans to validate end-to-end system performance.
Coordinate with operators, customers, software engineers, and mission stakeholders to ensure delivered capabilities align with operational needs.
Support automated testing initiatives and software qualification activities within an Agile development environment.
Required Qualifications
Experience in systems engineering, software systems engineering, mission systems engineering, or ground systems engineering.
Knowledge of requirements development, system architecture, interface management, and verification methodologies.
Experience with MBSE, SysML, and Cameo.
Understanding of Agile development practices, Scrum processes, and software lifecycle management.
Experience working with APIs, data models, communication protocols, and software integration activities.
Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and customer stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting space, satellite, aerospace, or ground segment systems.
Knowledge of satellite command and control, telemetry, mission operations, or spacecraft subsystems.
Familiarity with REST APIs, HTTP-based services, automated testing frameworks, and CI/CD practices.
Experience with test automation, verification planning, and software qualification efforts.
Basic scripting experience in Python or similar languages.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate understands both space operations and modern software development practices. They can bridge the gap between mission needs and software implementation, ensuring development teams deliver capabilities that support successful satellite operations. This role is best suited for a Software Systems Engineer, Ground Systems Engineer, MBSE Architect, Mission Systems Engineer, or Product Owner seeking to influence system design, software architecture, and mission execution at an enterprise scale.
