IT SUPPORT SPECIALIST 


Incumbent receives day-to-day technical direction from the Department of State’s designated Information Technology representative or other designated Government official.


Major Duties and Responsibilities


The IT Support Specialist’s role is to provide information technology, network, and end-user support for designated offices and personnel. The incumbent supports the operation and maintenance of IT systems and network infrastructure and provides Tier I and Tier II technical support to customers.


Responds to help desk tickets and service requests as appropriate and provides timely technical support to customers. Troubleshoots hardware, software, network connectivity, account access, peripheral equipment, mobile devices, and other end-user technology issues.


Provides Tier I and Tier II technical support and independently analyzes and resolves routine and complex technical problems. Escalates issues requiring additional technical expertise in accordance with established procedures.


Installs, configures, maintains, troubleshoots, and supports desktop and laptop computers, peripheral devices, approved software applications, and related IT equipment.


Provides technical support for mobile devices and approved cloud-based applications and services. Assists users with device configuration, connectivity, access, authentication, and application-related issues.


Supports designated network infrastructure and network-connected equipment. Troubleshoots network connectivity and performance issues and coordinates with appropriate technical personnel when additional support is required.


Supports the maintenance of secure network infrastructure and assists with implementation of approved system security configurations, policies, procedures, and technical standards.


Supports user account administration, access permissions, authentication, and other account-related requirements in accordance with established Department policies and procedures.


Supports IT asset management activities, including maintaining accurate inventory and accountability records; tracking assignment and location of IT equipment; and coordinating equipment issuance, transfer, replacement, return, and disposition.


Maintains hardware and software inventory information and assists with technology lifecycle management, equipment refreshes, and replacement activities.


Troubleshoots complex technical issues involving hardware, software, networks, mobile devices, cloud services, and other IT systems. Identifies root causes and recommends or implements appropriate corrective actions within assigned authority.


Supports system security and compliance activities in accordance with Department policies and applicable requirements. Identifies and reports suspected security incidents, vulnerabilities, unauthorized configurations, or other security concerns through appropriate channels.


Assists with the planning, testing, deployment, implementation, and maintenance of IT projects, system upgrades, migrations, equipment installations, and other technology solutions.


Coordinates with customers, management, technical personnel, vendors, and other stakeholders to identify technical requirements, resolve problems, and implement approved technology solutions.


Develops and maintains technical documentation, troubleshooting procedures, user instructions, system information, knowledge-base materials, and standard operating procedures.


Documents help desk requests, technical incidents, troubleshooting activities, corrective actions, equipment assignments, system configurations, and resolutions in accordance with established procedures.


Provides technical guidance to customers regarding approved hardware, software, mobile devices, applications, cloud services, security practices, and IT procedures.


Provides technical findings, recommendations, status information, and oral or written reports to management as required.


Works independently to assess technical priorities, manage multiple requirements, and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks with minimal supervision.


May be assigned to support IT projects, system deployments, equipment installations, or other temporary technical requirements at alternate locations.


Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


Applicant must possess demonstrated information technology experience sufficient to independently provide Tier I and Tier II technical support in a government, enterprise, or similarly complex IT environment.


Experience troubleshooting, configuring, maintaining, and supporting desktop and laptop computers, operating systems, software applications, peripheral devices, and related end-user technologies.


Experience supporting Local Area Network (LAN) environments and troubleshooting network connectivity and performance issues.


Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, network infrastructure, secure network operations, and common network troubleshooting principles.


Experience supporting mobile devices, including configuration, connectivity, authentication, application support, and troubleshooting.


Experience supporting cloud-based applications and services.


Knowledge of user account administration, access permissions, authentication, and account-management practices.


Experience with IT asset management, including inventory accountability, equipment issuance and return, lifecycle management, and hardware/software tracking.


Knowledge of information security principles, system security practices, and IT compliance requirements.


Experience troubleshooting complex hardware, software, network, mobile-device, and system-related technical problems.


Experience supporting IT projects, system upgrades, migrations, technology deployments, equipment refreshes, or implementation of new technology solutions.


Ability to develop and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, and user-support materials.


Ability to communicate technical information effectively to technical and non-technical customers.


Strong customer service, organizational, communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.


Ability to manage multiple technical requirements, establish priorities, exercise sound technical judgment, and work independently with minimal supervision.


Experience supporting information technology operations within a U.S. Government or Department of State environment is desirable, but not mandatory.


Relevant information technology certifications are desirable, but not mandatory.


  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance.
