Remote Software Engineer

Clearance Level: Must be eligible to obtain an Active Secret Clearance due to the nature of the work- Must be a US Citizen 

Location: This position can be Remote or Hybrid. If Hybrid, the worker should expect to be onsite up to 2 days a week. There may be some points in the project/work in which some additional onsite work may be required.

About the Role:

Aquila Technology is seeking a Software Engineerto join its team in support of one of the nation’s premier defense research organizations. The team the Software Engineer will be working with design, develop, and implement algorithms and architectures to build technologies and capabilities which provide resilient and interoperable communications across the joint force in congested and/or contested environments.

The team is seeking a software engineer to support the design, development, implementation, and testing of software for a series of large-scale communications system demonstrations. Work will be performed in a disciplined collaborative environment, employing modern programming practices.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Software architecture definition

  • System software design and implementation (primarily in C++). This will include protocol and state machine design alongside system designers to translate prototype simulations into real-time code

  • Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to design and prototype communications-based software

  • Integration, test design, and support from lab and field experiments

  • Aid in preparing technical documentation for software architectures and code, including technical specifications, reports, and technical presentations for multiple internal and external audiences



Required Experience:

  • B. Sci with 5+ years of directly relevant experience is acceptable

  • C++/C++11 experience

  • Java/Java Script experience

  • Source Control (Git/SVN/Clearcase/etc.) experience

  • Object-oriented development

  • Software modelling and the Unified Modelling Language (UML) experience

  • Software deployment and a knowledge of modern software deployment techniques

  • Experience in software DevSecOps

  • Experience with software algorithm development and performance improvements

  • Experience with design patterns and data structures

  • Experience with distributed systems and inter process communication (UDP/TCP/ActiveMQ/etc.)

  • Experience with the Linux development environment and/or commercial real-time operating systems

  • Experience with hardware abstraction layers

  • Experience with software lifecycle processes

  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills especially applied to writing technical documents

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams



Desired Experience:

  • Digital signal processing and implementation of protocols and methods into software

  • Proficiency in Python

  • Demonstrate familiarity with MATLAB

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage tasks and projects (e.g. using Microsoft Project)

Expenses related to training programs, certifications, books, materials, meals, transportation, or other non-tuition costs are not eligible under the Tuition Reimbursement Program. All tuition reimbursement requests must be submitted to and approved by the team member’s Manager prior to course registration. Reimbursement will be issued upon successful course completion and submission of final grades and proof of payment.


401K with Principal – Eligible to participate day 1 of employment. Company match on employee contributions:

• Eligibility on date of hire
• Employer Match- 100% of first 3% and 50% of next 2%
• Vesting- 100%
• Contribution limit- $24,500
• Catch-up contribution limit- $8,000
• Catch-up contribution limit for ages 60-63 in calendar year- $11,250
• Catchup contributions must be directed to Roth bucket if earned over
$150k in 2025


Cell Phone & Internet Reimbursed up to $150 monthly to cover cell phone, data, and home internet expenses. Aquila Technology will reimburse team members who work from home ONLY for cell phone/mobile device fees for work-related communications and/or operations each month. Employees eligible for this benefit must work remote 2 days a week or more to qualify.


Buy Your Own Device (BYOD) – Team members are eligible for reimbursement of up to $1,500 every three (3) years for the purchase of electronic equipment used to access corporate services. To qualify for this benefit, employees must have completed a minimum of six (6) months of employment and must agree to and sign the Device Minimum Configuration Form prior to reimbursement. Electronic devices eligible under the Buy Your Own Device (BYOD) program are limited to cell phones, laptops, and tablets.


Clearance: An interim clearance is sufficient to start with.
Work Location: This position can be Remote or Hybrid. If Hybrid, the worker should expect to be onsite up to 2 days a week. There may be some points in the project/work in which some additional onsite work may be required.
Interview process: Initial phone screen/zoom screen, second round interview will be in person for local candidates. If there is a relocation candidate, a second round zoom will be acceptable, but local candidates should plan for onsite.
