Description
Leidos Defense Systems’ Mechanical Design & Analysis Department is seeking talented Mechanical Analysis Interns to join a diverse team to create unique solutions for complex problems. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber, and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific, and IT solutions.
Leidos' Mechanical Design and Analysis Department is actively seeking college students (Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Grad) to work at our Huntsville facility over the summer break (May, June, July, and August depending on student availability). This position will allow students the opportunity to experience hands-on technical work in structural and/or thermal analysis, FEA modeling, and hand calculations.
Candidate(s) will receive mentorship from junior and senior engineers, and the intern will take actual ownership of analysis tasks. They will be given challenges that make a real impact on hardware that is delivered to our customers.

Primary Responsibilities
- Support engineering analysis activities for DoD customers utilizing a broad engineering knowledge base.
- Develop structural and/or thermal analysis models using FEMAP (structural) or Ansys (thermal) for calculating response in system structures in effort to validate design.
- Calculate margins to determine design viability.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to produce excellent solutions for customers.
- Present analysis results to senior engineering staff.
Basic Qualifications
- Student must be working toward a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET accredited college or university.
- Student must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Overall GPA of 3.5 or above is required.
- Student must be willing to work in-office in the Huntsville, AL area.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Students with the following experience are desired:
- Experience with FEA software – FEMAP preferred.
- Experience with thermal analysis software - Ansys preferred.
- Hands-on experience with the design and assembly of mechanical systems.
- Strong self-starter who showcases initiative to take on complex technical challenges.
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, and receive mentorship from an excellent engineering team.
