Physical Requirements
Field walkdowns may involve construction sites with uneven surfaces and work in progress, walking more than half a mile, climbing ladders to reach remote areas, and wearing protective clothing.
- Develop HVAC designs and produce design output documents, including calculations for equipment sizing, duct sizing, pressure drops, cooling tower sizing, heating and cooling loads, and air balancing.
- Create and modify piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), system descriptions, and mechanical equipment lists.
- Coordinate HVAC design with fire protection design and review vendor documents.
- Define the scope of technical programs and develop effective, high-quality solutions to unique or complex engineering challenges.
- Apply advanced technical practices, including complicated requirements, new or special materials and processes, and difficult coordination needs, to problem solving and program planning.
- Provide technical leadership and direction across departments on programs that need new approaches or new applications of existing engineering principles.
- Prepare plans, schedules, budgets, and staffing requirements for technical tasks; monitor progress, expenditures, and quality of work.
- Evaluate program results and prepare reports and recommendations.
- Identify and recommend improvements where existing technology or methods fall short.
- Communicate results and objectives verbally and in writing to customers, colleagues, and management, and occasionally prepare reports for external publication.
- Mentor and guide less senior engineers.
- Stay current on advancements in the field and contribute through technical societies, patent disclosures, technical papers, and articles.
- Perform weekly field walkdowns of job sites to support ongoing engineering work.
Required Qualifications
- Education and experience: Ph.D. in an applicable science or engineering discipline with 5+ years of experience, an MS with 8+ years, or a BS with 10+ years.
- BS in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering, or current Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering.
- At least 10 years of HVAC design experience in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 90A, 90B, 91, and 801; ASHRAE Fundamentals; ASME AG-1, 509, and 510; SMACNA; and ARI 410, 430, and 450.
- Ability to walk down systems in the field.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance. An active clearance is not required to start; the selected candidate will be told when to apply based on work assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active DOE clearance (L or Q) held within the past two years.
- Experience with 2D MicroStation CADD.
- Prior design experience with the Client and familiarity with its processes and procedures for engineering support to Client facilities.
