Enterprise Messaging & Secure Interoperability Engineer
Onsite Annapolis Junction, MD | US Citizenship Required | Travel (less than 10%)

Responsibilities
As an Enterprise Messaging & Secure Interoperability Engineer, you will engineer, secure, and maintain the cross-boundary email and collaborative messaging infrastructure that connects the enterprise with external partner organizations and government agencies. Supporting a mission-critical, 24/7 operational environment, this role focuses on driving seamless end-to-end mail flow across complex organizational perimeters, hybrid network boundaries, and multi-tenant platforms. Operating across Microsoft Exchange, Linux-based MTA gateways, hybrid cloud relay protocols, and core networking layers, you will perform deep-packet and log-level diagnostics across the complete transport stack—including DNS/MX routing, PKI certificate validation, TLS encryption, and LDAP directory lookups. Collaborating closely with internal engineering divisions and external agency partners, you will engineer scalable transport configurations, enforce stringent security and compliance baselines, and continuously evolve cross-domain messaging capabilities.
Requirements
-Solid background supporting enterprise IT infrastructure, core systems, networking, or messaging platforms.
-Fundamental understanding of SMTP routing mechanics, mail transport agents, and cross-system message delivery.
-Practical familiarity with Windows Server OS environments and core administrative frameworks.
-Working knowledge of critical transport and identity dependencies, including DNS, PKI certificates, and TLS encryption protocols.
-Foundational understanding of LDAP queries, Active Directory integration, and user authentication structures.
-Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot multi-layer system connectivity issues and packet flow breakdowns.
-Hands-on experience using technical diagnostic and administrative tools such as PowerShell, OpenSSL, Telnet, and MMC consoles.
-Strong analytical problem-solving skills paired with a demonstrated capacity to rapidly master new technologies.
-Ability to work autonomously and prioritize tasks effectively within fast-paced, 24/7 operational environments.
Preferred Qualifications
-Direct experience engineering, configuring, or supporting Microsoft Exchange Server and Exchange Online (M365) hybrid environments.
-Hands-on experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) hosting email gateways or underlying network applications.
-In-depth experience configuring SMTP relays, mail connectors, transport rules, and performing header-level message flow diagnostics.
-Proven track record managing SSL/TLS certificates, PKI trust chains, and mutual authentication (mTLS) for secure cross-domain messaging.
-Experience managing Active Directory schema, LDAP directory integrations, and cross-forest trust relationships.
-Skill in diagnosing complex DNS record types (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, PTR) and resolving cross-network connectivity bottlenecks.
-Ability to write PowerShell scripts to automate Exchange management, user provisioning, and transport auditing.
-Practical background enabling federated communications and mail routing across disparate organizations or high-security perimeters.
-Experience operating within 24/7/365, geographically distributed, or strictly regulated defense/enterprise environments.
