Independent Software Engineer

The Mission

The MASY Group is seeking an experienced full-stack Software Engineer to support the continued development and expansion of MASY'S video training platform. It is a Java/JavaFX desktop application deployed on both Windows and macOS, with synchronized multi-angle video playback. The application performs well on Mac but has shown inconsistent performance on Windows – particularly pertaining to skipping and video playback. We are evaluating the best path forward, whether stabilizing the existing architecture, selectively retooling components, or transitioning to a more sustainable technology stack.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who can independently evaluate the existing codebase, recommend a practical technical path forward, and support ongoing development and video playback optimization.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, develop, and maintain the existing Windows Java/JavaFX desktop application, with immediate emphasis on Windows performance.
• Package and deploy the application for use in locked-down government environments, including installation from the cloud or removable media.
• Build and optimize synchronized multi-camera video playback across multiple camera angles, including seeking, scrubbing, encoding, compression, streaming, and audio integration, and recommend end-user hardware/GPU minimum requirements.
• Design and maintain AWS infrastructure using EC2/containers, S3, CloudFront, IAM, and KMS, supporting secure content storage, upload, and distribution for potential deployment in AWS GovCloud.
• Develop backend capabilities supporting software licensing, seat management, administration, student metrics, and reporting.
• Maintain and enhance exiting mapping and GPS tracking functionality supporting live team and exercise views.
• Apply secure software-development practices aligned with government cybersecurity and compliance requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Strong professional software-development experience.
• Experience developing and troubleshooting Windows desktop applications.
• Experience working with Java desktop applications; JavaFX experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience optimizing video playback, encoding, compression, or synchronization.
• Hands-on experience with AWS, including S3, CloudFront, IAM, and compute services.
• Experience developing backend services, APIs, and databases.
• Ability to independently assess, design, troubleshoot, and deliver production software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting desktop applications across both Windows and macOS
• Experience with multi-stream video technologies such as FFmpeg, GStreamer, or similar frameworks.
• Experience with C#/.NET, or similar technologies for potential future modernization.
• Experience with AWS GovCloud.
• Familiarity with FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, DoD impact levels, or similar government compliance frameworks.
• Experience with GIS, GPS data, or mapping libraries.
