Systems Architect

Support modernization of a standalone, air-gapped enterprise network providing application functions to approximately 3,000 users. This position partners with the Chief Architect to develop decision-quality enterprise architecture products.

Responsibilities

• Review secure and unsecure phone systems, network and platform hardware and software, and application services to identify modernization and optimization opportunities.
• Assess lifecycle status, obsolescence, duplication, interoperability, standards alignment, investment dependencies, and modernization opportunities.
• Identify dependencies, gaps, redundancies, constraints, and risks across infrastructure, applications, data, security, identity, cloud, and networks.
• Develop technology recommendations and an enterprise roadmap with the Chief Architect, including adoption, sustainment, migration, consolidation, and retirement recommendations.
• Prepare decision packages documenting alternatives, assumptions, costs, risks, technical debt, standards impacts, and recommendations; brief leadership on overall cost and value.
• Develop and maintain reference architectures, conformance criteria, exception guidance, and current, target, and transition architecture products.
• Assess architecture maturity and capability gaps; prioritize initiatives and establish intake, work plans, templates, repositories, and performance measures.
• Coordinate architecture recommendations with engineering teams and other stakeholders to ensure implementable and operationally supportable solutions.

Required Skills

• Enterprise architecture leadership in a complex, federated, regulated, or mission-oriented IT enterprise.
• Establishing or maturing an enterprise architecture practice, preferably from a low-maturity or start-up condition.
• Business architecture, including capability modeling, value streams, operating models, stakeholder outcomes, and investment framing.
• Technology strategy, portfolio management, lifecycle planning, technical-debt analysis, road mapping, and modernization.
• Architecture principles, standards, patterns, reference architectures, and exception processes.
• Executive-level writing, briefing, facilitation, negotiation, and stakeholder influence.
• Ability to distinguish strategic enterprise architecture from solution and technical architecture, engineering execution, cybersecurity authority, and operational authority.

Highly Desired Skills

• Producing decision-useful current-state, target-state, and transition architectures across multiple technology domains.
• Knowledge of relevant architecture frameworks and modeling methods, such as DoDAF, UAF, capability-based planning, and minimum viable architecture.
• Understanding of IC and DoW governance, cybersecurity, acquisition, lifecycle, and operational considerations.
• Experience applying Sponsor architecture principles, standards, reference architectures, and exception processes.
