Job Description

Duties

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an Air Reserve Technician Section Small Shop Chief no more than 25% of the time over journey level mechanics that troubleshoot, overhaul, service, and dispatch powered ground support equipment and to train reservists in the accomplishment of tasks set forth herein.
  • Performs administrative supervisory duties over the journey level mechanics in the section no more than 25 percent of the time and performs preventive maintenance on ground power support equipment.
  • Performs major maintenance on ground support equipment such as power sources, major components, support components, and associated components and performs periodic routine and special inspections of all scheduled equipment.
  • Maintains records and documents actions and utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Certifies work produced under the USAF Technical Order Program and utilizes various vehicles to accomplish dispatch and expedite function of the AGE Section.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C for WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of principles of electricity (AC/DC), solid state circuitry, and safety rules and regulations pertaining to powered support systems and knowledge of the theory and operation of internal combustion diesel and gasoline engines and knowledge of tool, equipment, and materials accounting and security.

2. Knowledge of the operation of emergency generator power systems and knowledge of regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation and knowledge of USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures.

3. Knowledge of security requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations and policy statements and knowledge of applicable personnel, manpower, time, and attendance, and budgeting instructions, guidelines, and requirements and knowledge and skill in operation of various vehicles.

4. Skill in reading, interpreting, and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, and similar guides. Skill in using hand and power tools, instruments, test equipment, and electrical meters to include special tools such as hydraulic knock-out tools, hammers, drills, valve spring compressors, and micrometers.

5. Skill in installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, and uninterruptible power systems; and in maintaining, overhauling, repairing, and reconditioning internal combustion engines, both diesel and gasoline. Skill in troubleshooting complex situations related to electrical power generators.

6. Ability to apply shop procedures, policies, written and oral instructions, and directives sufficient to provide training to others. Ability to follow budgeting directives, instructions, and procedures.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:May work inside or outside. Inside work involves frequent exposure to drafts, changing temperature, and loud noise. Outside work may involve exposure to bad weather, rain or snow, or wet or icy conditions. Both inside and outside, frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors or surfaces. May work on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy and which may be dangerous to operate or repair because of defects. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and electrical shock while repairing, positioning, adjusting, and moving equipment, and is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids, and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, the incumbent must follow numerous safety procedures and wear equipment such as protective eye glasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, gloves, and clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Performs work which involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing, and arm movement. Sometimes must work in awkward positions or cramped areas. Must frequently lift and carry items weighing up to about 40 pounds and lift heavier items using jacks, hoists, or helpers.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
