Role Overview
Our client is seeking a Sr. Systems Engineering Lead to oversee systems engineering and endpoint device support across a network of specialized technical communications facilities. In this role, you will direct a multidisciplinary team handling endpoint deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management across several locations. You will ensure that all infrastructure components, platforms, services, network interfaces, security controls, and operational processes integrate seamlessly into a cohesive, maintainable ecosystem.
The successful candidate will possess well-rounded, disciplined systems-engineering judgment rather than a narrow focus on specific products. You must be able to comprehend the entire systems landscape, break down complex technical requirements, manage dependencies, evaluate engineering tradeoffs, and verify that all delivered capabilities fulfill mission-critical operational needs.
Primary Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Lifecycle Management: Oversee the architecture, rollout, and lifecycle management of endpoint systems across multiple facility locations.
Standardization: Establish and enforce strict configuration and imaging baselines for all workstations, servers, and peripheral hardware.
Personnel Coordination: Supervise and coordinate endpoint support personnel stationed across geographically distributed sites.
Systems Integration: Partner with network, security, and facilities teams to drive systems integration initiatives.
Advanced Troubleshooting: Serve as an escalation point to diagnose and resolve complex systems and endpoint issues that span multiple technical domains and organizational boundaries.
Lifecycle Planning: Assist with capacity planning, performance evaluation, patching, software upgrades, technology refreshes, and end-of-life cycle planning.
Automation & Resilience: Design and maintain automated provisioning, configuration, testing, monitoring, and recovery workflows to optimize system resilience, redundancy, security, and operational consistency.
Continuous Improvement: Actively participate in incident response, problem management, root-cause analysis, and process optimization.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with enterprise architects, network engineers, cybersecurity experts, software application teams, operations personnel, and program stakeholders.
Classified Environment Support: Manage configurations for classified enclaves and cross-domain solutions, integrate VTC endpoints, and collaborate with security officers to maintain full endpoint compliance inside secured environments (such as SCIF and SAP facilities).
Foundational Skills & Core Competencies
Deep understanding of the systems-engineering lifecycle and requirements management.
Proven ability in system decomposition, integration, interface management, dependencies, and traceability.
Core knowledge of compute, operating systems, data storage, virtualization, containers, and cloud environments.
Proficiency in identity management, authentication, authorization protocols, encryption, and security-control integration.
Strong grasp of networking fundamentals and distributed systems.
Mastery of reliability, availability, maintainability, resilience, backup, and disaster recovery concepts.
Practical knowledge of configuration, change, release, incident, and problem management frameworks.
Experience with verification, validation, test planning, and establishing acceptance criteria.
Familiarity with automation, scripting languages, configuration management tools, and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) principles.
Skill in performance data analysis, capacity planning, and technical risk mitigation.
Location & Travel Requirements
Location: Based out of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, with routine travel to program locations.
Qualifications
Required:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a technical or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience: 7+ years of dedicated systems engineering experience, with a heavy emphasis on endpoint management.
Leadership: Proven track record of managing or supporting large, geographically dispersed technical teams.
Environment Expertise: Demonstrated experience supporting classified environments, federal systems, or Special Access Program (SAP) infrastructure and facilities.
Compliance Frameworks: Familiarity with the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and NIST SP 800-37 / 800-53 security authorization frameworks as they relate to secured endpoint environments.
Preferred (Nice to Have):
Professional certifications such as Security+, MCSE, or ITIL.
Hands-on experience with modern endpoint management software and deployment/imaging platforms.
