Koniag IT Systems, LLC a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Technical/ Scientific Writer to support KITS and our government customer in Annapolis, MD. This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain a Public Trust.

The Chesapeake Bay Program Office (CBPO) is a unique regional partnership that is responsible for the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. CBPO partners include the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, New York, West Virginia and District of Columbia as well as other Federal Agencies and Universities. The US Environmental Protection Agency represents the Federal Government in an effort to protect the Chesapeake Bay and better coordinate water quality and restoration efforts throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The Chesapeake Bay Program Office (CBPO) Data Center is the focal point for supporting the development of critical decision support tools, the data sharing enterprise and supporting scientific computing across the partnership.
Background:
Koniag Government Services (KGS), an Alaskan Native Corporation, that staffs EPA Data Center at the Chesapeake Bay Program Office has an immediate need for a skilled Technical and Scientific Writer to document various elements of an important and widely used modeling platform known as the Chesapeake Assessment and Scenario Tool (CAST). This web-based modeling tool is a nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment load (pollutant) estimator tool that streamlines environmental planning and can be used to answer questions about the effect of different BMPs (Best Management Practices) on water quality. Users specify a geographical area, and then select best management practices (BMPs) to apply for that area. CAST builds the scenario and provides estimates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment load reductions. The cost of a scenario is also provided so that users may select the most cost-effective practices to reduce pollutant loads.
It is planned that the CAST Application will undergo further development with added tools to include a spatially enabled visualization feature. These enhancements will provide spatially explicit estimates and data that will help CAST be understood, used and supported by partners and stakeholders with a wide range of technical knowledge. The Technical Writer will work closely with Water Quality Scientists, Software Developers, Stakeholders and also work along-side modelers to update documentation of a GIS-based version of CAST that incorporates spatially explicit data that would allow users to refine their planning to target other data.
Some initial tasks will include updates to and revisions of the CAST website by detailing modernized resources and improved analytical tools. With this improved documentation, partners will gain deeper insight into model results, explore scenarios with greater confidence, and support more informed decision making across jurisdictions. The Technical Writer will also modernize CAST's user experience through coordinated upgrades that will document support tools and visual analytical tools. Work will include overhauling user guides and self-help resources; reorganizing and updating model documentation to improve discoverability; and refreshing CAST's visualization components-including charts, mapping functions, and comparison tools-to deliver more intuitive, interactive, and accessible scenario outputs that better support decision making. Work shall be coordinated with various CBPO stakeholders, including data analysts, jurisdictional power users, and coordinated through the Clean Water Goal Team and its workgroups.

- Transform complex environmental science into clear, usable reports for other data consumers, Chesapeake Bay restoration stakeholders, and the public at-large.
- Explain scientific topics by translating data from computer models and water quality testing into clear and usable facts.
- Update and revise existing information with the CBPO Data Center content management system that provides information to Chesapeake Bay Program partners, technical issues related to Best Management Practices, Watershed Model processes, and other watershed management strategies.
- Update and revise existing information with the CBPO Data Center content management system that provides information about Koniag developed and maintained applications for environmental data dissemination, water quality, and general business applications.

- Maintain uniform and consistent terminology, abbreviations, and formatting styles.
Education and Experience:
- Candidate must have a BA/BS degree.
- Must also have 3-5 years of experience in a relevant field (or fields) such as: Information Systems, Environmental Science/Services, Environmental Monitoring, GIS/Geospatial Sciences/Mapping, Environmental Management (compliance, sustainability), Data Analysis/Data Science, Water Quality/Conservation.
- Successful candidate is subject to a background investigation by the government and must be able to meet the requirements to hold a position of public trust.
- Must speak fluent English
