General Summary

The Mechanical Engineering Manager plans and directs all mechanical engineering efforts from product development to production, ensuring all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes meet both customer requirements and internal organizational standards. The manager also assists in proposal development, quality assurance, procurement, and manufacturing, while providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineering staff and drafters.
Essential Job Functions

• Oversee all mechanical engineering efforts from product development through successful project delivery.
• Manage workload, analyze, and anticipate staffing requirements.
• Provide recommendations regarding hiring, perform employee evaluations, and conduct performance counseling when necessary.
• Work with program management to develop cost and schedule baselines and targets.
• Develop and implement processes that improve efficiency and enhance productivity.
• Assist in improving workflows within Product Data Management (PDM) and the Configuration Management (CM) Plan.
• Participate in Change Control Boards (CCB).
• Support proposal development, quality assurance, procurement, and manufacturing operations.
• Provide routine status updates and reports to senior engineering leadership and Program Managers.
• Manage customer and client communication as necessary.
• Ensure all designs meet internal and external customer requirements as well as industry design standards.
• Evaluate the final product's overall performance, reliability, and safety; assist in creating production drawings and preparing design files for machined parts, sheet metal fabrication, and assemblies.
• Provide mentoring, leadership, and technical guidance to mechanics, technicians, and junior staff.
• Routinely communicate with production and manufacturing personnel to optimize design and assembly procedures.
• Participate in equipment and tooling selection and purchasing.
• Safely handle customer- or partner-furnished equipment and materials.
• Maintain availability for a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience managing and leading a diverse team.
• Strong knowledge of end-to-end engineering development processes.
• Working knowledge of CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
• Proficiency in GD&T and relevant drafting/design standards (e.g., ASME Y14.100, Y14.5, or equivalent industry/defense standards).
• Knowledge of land, air, or sea structural and hydraulic systems.
• Ability to communicate and interact effectively across all levels of the organization and with external clients.
• Strong multi-project management capabilities.
• Practical experience with Product Data Management (PDM), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
• Core understanding of mechanical concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, and materials science.
• Knowledge of various fabrication and assembly methods, including metal machining, sheet metal fabrication, and welding.
• Familiarity with industry specifications for materials, parts, and manufacturing processes.
• Strong creative problem-solving skills and commitment to excellence in a fast-paced team environment.
• Ability to obtain a security clearance if required by project scope.
• Ability to travel as needed.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of six (6) years of applicable mechanical engineering design experience.
• Three (3) or more years of direct management or supervisory experience preferred.
• Manufacturing experience in machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and assembly preferred.
• Fixed-wing, rotary-wing, or structural/hydraulic system maintenance or design experience is a plus.
• Technical experience with 3D scanning equipment and 3D printing is a plus.
