We are seeking a Mid-Level Software Engineer to design, build, and mature software systems supporting simulation, optimization, and decision support for mission-focused applications. You will help transform prototypes and advanced technical concepts into reliable, maintainable software used in operational and decision-support settings.

This role offers the opportunity to work across the full software development lifecycle while collaborating with researchers, engineers, and end users to turn complex technical concepts into practical mission capabilities.

This position is full-time on-site in Reston, VA, including work within associated secure laboratory environments.
Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain production-quality software supporting mission-oriented analysis, simulation, optimization, and decision support.
• Translate sophisticated algorithms, models, and research prototypes into usable, reliable software applications.
• Develop backend software, APIs, and integrations in collaborative production and prototype environments.
• Build clear, intuitive front-end capabilities that present complex data and workflows effectively to users.
• Improve software quality through sound design, readable code, automated testing, documentation, and maintainable engineering practices.
• Contribute across the full development lifecycle, including concept exploration, prototyping, implementation, testing, demonstration, deployment, and sustainment.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to understand user needs and deliver practical mission outcomes.
• Work full-time on-site in the Reston, VA office and associated secure laboratory environments.

Minimum Qualifications

• Active Secret security clearance.
• S. citizenship required.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 2+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong foundation in object-oriented design and software development using Java, C++, Rust, or a comparable programming language.
• Experience creating backend software and/or APIs in collaborative production or prototype environments.
• Strong software-engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, engineers, and end users.
• Ability to work on-site in Reston, VA.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience writing high-performance, multithreaded, parallel, or concurrent software.
• Experience developing software where readability, maintainability, testing, and disciplined engineering practices are emphasized.
• Experience in defense, national security, or other mission-driven environments.
• Experience with TypeScript and React or another modern front-end framework.
• Experience with 3D, geospatial, or high-performance visualization technologies such as WebGL or OpenGL.
• Experience with data-intensive or distributed systems, including databases, messaging systems, and asynchronous processing.
• Familiarity with AI/ML-enabled applications, including LLM-integrated systems.
• Experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
