Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic/MVO)

Duties

• Responds to the site of accidents or other emergencies involving injury, illness, or potential environmental risks.
• Airway Obstructions and Respiratory Arrest: Identifies, treats, communicates, and documents airway obstructions and respiratory arrest.
• Controls external bleeding with various treatment protocols.
• Performs advanced assessment and treatment of the pediatric patient to include infant and neonatal resuscitation.
• Performs light extrication utilizing a variety of light rescue tools and equipment to safely remove patients from accident locations.
• Considers pharmacological intervention for pain control in all situations.
• Responsible for implementing procedures for hazardous materials during the course of the duties which include biological, chemical, or radiological agents used by or maintained by the military or by rogue agents against the population.
• Performs routine Operator safety checks and inventories all supplies and equipment.
• Provides regular and recurring training classes based on course lesson plans via classroom instruction for both medical and nonmedical personnel (both military and civilian) assigned to the installation.

• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position is designated Tier 3, Non-Critical Sensitive, Moderate Risk and requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Level as a condition of employment.
• This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
• This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
• Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
• Continued employment in this position is contingent upon incumbent meeting all credentialing requirements.
• One year probationary period is required.
• If hired under state paramedic license must obtain National Registry Paramedic (NRP) certification within 52 weeks.
• This position is designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent may be required to report to work or remain at work.
• This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
• Position requires employee to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.
• May be required to assume critical and essential personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
• Requires use of Personal Protective Equipment such as OSHA Level B-D. Employee is required to wear Respiratory protection in hot and cold environments for extended periods of time.
• Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Incumbent must obtain and maintain a government driver's license.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience 1) evaluating medical emergencies to provide advanced life support care, 2) conducting examinations in an emergency setting and interpretating vital signs, 3) performing advanced airway care, 4) administering emergency medicine techniques such as CPR/First Aid, Basic and Advanced Life Support, AND 5) operating an emergency vehicle. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
