ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

Duties

• You will design, develop, and teach executive courses on alliance management, security partnerships, coalition integration, and interoperability. Cover defense diplomacy, burden sharing, and Indo-Pacific security architecture
• You will examine how bilateral, minilateral, and multinational alliances generate capability, strengthen deterrence, enable collective defense, and contribute to Indo-Pacific regional security.
• You will develop educational programs that help security practitioners overcome political, institutional, and operational challenges when building and sustaining effective alliances and coalitions.
• You will lead and support Center activities, including executive courses, workshops, policy dialogues, senior-leader engagements, strategic visits, and international partnerships.
• You will serve as an action officer responsible for planning, executing, and assessing courses, workshops, strategic dialogues, and regional engagements from concept to completion.
• You will develop curriculum, instructional materials, case studies, simulations, and experiential-learning activities tailored for diverse civilian and military audiences.
• You will teach and facilitate seminars and collaborative learning sessions among security practitioners from across the Indo-Pacific region.
• You will conduct research and publish policy-relevant work on alliances, partnerships, coalition integration, burden sharing, interoperability, and regional security architecture.
• You will engage allied and partner governments, defense institutions, academia, and regional stakeholders to strengthen networks and deepen collective security cooperation.
• You will maintain the deep regional expertise required to support executive education, strategic initiatives, academic partnerships, and public outreach.
• You will collaborate across departments to integrate partnership perspectives into programming on strategic deterrence, force posture, security cooperation, and resilience.
• You will mentor Fellows, contributing directly to their professional and intellectual development, and support the administration and institutional growth of the College.
• You will travel internationally to support DKI APCSS programs, maintaining professional, respectful, and collegial relationships with leadership, staff, and regional partners.
• You will maintain productive, professional, respectful, and collegial relationships with leadership, faculty, staff, Fellows, and regional partners.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

• An advanced degree in international relations, security studies, political science, strategic studies, military studies, public policy, Asian studies, or a related discipline. A doctorate or other terminal degree is preferred.
• Demonstrated substantive knowledge, research, or professional experience related to alliances, security partnerships, coalition operations, security cooperation, defense diplomacy, regional security architecture, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct rigorous research, analyze contemporary security issues, and produce scholarly or policy-relevant work.
• Demonstrated ability to teach, facilitate, and mentor adult learners from diverse professional, national, and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to communicate complex political, strategic, institutional, and military issues clearly to practitioner audiences.
• Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and execute complex projects or programs.
• Ability to work effectively as a collegial, collaborative, and team-oriented faculty member.
• Ability to use contemporary technologies and digital tools in research, teaching, collaboration, and program execution.
• Demonstrated commitment to the DKI APCSS mission and to advancing security cooperation and understanding throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Additional desired experience includes:

• Research, professional, military, government, or field experience involving one or more U.S. allies or security partners in the Indo-Pacific.
• Experience working with or studying ministries of defense, foreign affairs, military organizations, combatant commands, international organizations, policy institutions, or allied and partner governments.
• Experience examining the political and institutional dimensions of coalition interoperability, burden sharing, role differentiation, or allied contributions to collective security.
• Experience in teaching, facilitation, executive education, strategic engagement, policy dialogue, exercises, or multinational workshops.
• Experience building professional networks and fostering collaboration among individuals from diverse national, institutional, and professional backgrounds.
• Foreign-language capability relevant to the Indo-Pacific.

DKI APCSS seeks qualified candidates at the Associate Professor or Professor level specializing in Alliance Management, Coalition Integration, and Regional Security Architecture to join the Department of Allies and Partners.

The Center welcomes applications from both established scholar-practitioners and exceptional early-career professionals. The successful candidate's academic rank and salary will be determined based on education, professional experience, scholarly record, teaching and facilitation experience, subject-matter expertise, leadership, and demonstrated capacity to contribute to the DKI APCSS mission.

The successful candidate will educate civilian and military security practitioners on how alliances and partnerships generate greater capability, interoperability, and collective action in the Indo-Pacific. The position focuses on how alliances and security partnerships are built, managed, adapted, and integrated to strengthen deterrence, distribute responsibilities, improve interoperability, and enable effective collective action.

The position will examine bilateral alliances and increasingly important minilateral and multilateral security arrangements and how these relationships contribute to an evolving Indo-Pacific regional security architecture. Areas of particular interest include alliance management, coalition integration, burden sharing and role differentiation, interoperability, security cooperation, defense diplomacy, and the political and institutional challenges of collective defense and security.

Candidates are not expected to enter the position with expertise across every alliance, partnership, country, or element of this portfolio. DKI APCSS seeks individuals with demonstrated expertise in relevant areas and the intellectual ability and professional commitment to develop broader expertise in alliance management, coalition integration, and Indo-Pacific regional security architecture.

Faculty members at DKI APCSS are expected to be more than subject-matter experts. They serve as educators, facilitators, curriculum designers, action officers, researchers, mentors, and institutional leaders. Faculty plan and execute executive education courses, workshops, strategic dialogues, and regional engagements; develop and facilitate curriculum; conduct policy-relevant research; and build relationships with security professionals throughout the Indo-Pacific.
