Senior Precision Machinist

MANTECH seeks a motivated, career and customer-oriented Senior Precision Machinist to join our team in Livermore, CA. This is an onsite position.

The Senior Precision Machinist will leverage their strong technical background and knowledge to manufacture centimeter-scale components with sub-micron precision in support of scientific research for Department of Energy programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Work independently and in coordination with target fabrication engineers to plan and execute precision machining of target components and perform in-process metrology.

• Set up, program, and operate conventional and precision diamond turning CNC lathes and mills using CAD/CAM software and SolidWorks 3D models.

• Perform in-process metrology, component inspections, and machining calculations using microscopy, interferometry, and optical coordinate metrology to verify specifications.

• Interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and informal sketches to identify dimensional specifications and design specialized fixtures for part manufacturing.

• Handle valuable and extremely fragile components daily in a fast-paced environment while strictly adhering to safe operating procedures and accurate data recording.

• Recognize, report, and assist with diagnosing machining or operational equipment issues while writing standard operating procedures and training team members.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate degree, vocational school degree, or Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline, or equivalent experience in lieu of education (6 additional years of experience).

• Demonstrated knowledge of precision machining tools and techniques, with the ability to interpret engineering drawings and fabrication procedures.

• Ability to learn, navigate, and operate computer software, CAD/CAM applications, metrology instrumentation, and microscopes.

• Attention to detail with the capability to identify non-conforming specifications, correct erroneous process steps, and suggest process enhancements.

• Experience working across technical teams to drive operational goals and manage complex technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3 + years of direct experience in a job with similar precision machining and fabrication responsibilities.

• Experience handling very small, delicate components and operating precision CNC diamond turning equipment.

• Experience operating process-control and data management computer software alongside advanced metrology instrumentation.

• Strong problem-solving and organizational skills with the ability to convey technical ideas efficiently and effectively.

Clearance Requirements:

• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE-Q security clearance is required. U.S. Citizenship is required.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to operate, maneuver, and control heavy machinery and industrial equipment safely and effectively.
• Frequently positions self, bends, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls to perform equipment inspections, routine maintenance, and operational setups.
• Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry tools, equipment, and heavy components weighing up to 50 lbs independently.
• Requires standing and walking for extended periods across industrial, shop floor, or outdoor project environments.
• Must possess fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to operate complex machine controls, joysticks, and levers.
• Must maintain close visual acuity, depth perception, and auditory awareness to monitor machine operations and hear equipment safety alarms in high-noise environments.
• Ability to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods, including steel-toe boots, hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility vests, and ear protection.
