Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography)

Duties

• Independently perform and monitor overnight polysomnographic studies.
• Prepare, calibrate, interface, and operate all equipment used in polysomnographic procedures.
• Explain procedures, and position patient to insure patient comfort for optimal recording of EEG.
• Record significant observations such as sleep stage, heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen saturation level, body position; presence and/or absence of sleep apnea, snoring, cardiac arrhythmias, and night terrors.
• Calibrate and maintain in proper working order complex respiratory equipment.
• Interpret data obtained from all night recording.
• Apply and verify appropriate physiological monitoring sensors.
• Identify and respond to technical and patient-related problems.
• Exercise independent judgment during overnight testing.
• Prioritize and independently manage technical and patient-care needs of overnight studies while maintaining continuous monitoring and accurate documentation.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
• Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• Health care workers will be offered the Hepatitis B vaccine or immunity testing, and if declined, will be required to sign a Hepatitis B declination form.
• Tuberculosis (TB): This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
• This position is for 2nd Shift - 1800-0630.
• This position may have a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement.
• Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
• This position is subject to pre-employment Drug Testing and random testing thereafter.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: conducting polysomnography tests; analyzing polysomnography test results; maintaining polysomnography equipment.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as: Polysomnography or Sleep Technology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
