Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience GS-08: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with the delivery of fire protection training to personnel using established lesson plans or instructional materials; and 2) Performing fire prevention inspections on facilities or equipment to identify fire hazards; AND 3) Responding to fire alarms or other emergencies as part of an organized team. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Delivering fire protection or emergency services instruction in a classroom or field setting; and 2) Assisting in the development of training materials or lesson plans for fire prevention programs; and 3) Conducting evaluations of personnel during training exercises to ensure compliance with established standards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Specialized Experience GS-10: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Developing lesson plans or training aids for a fire protection training program; and 2) Presenting established blocks of instruction on fire protection or emergency response topics; and 3) Recommending modifications to training curriculum or instructional methods based on program evaluations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
Along with the specialized experience listed above, there are required certifications that will be needed prior to entry for each grade level.
GS-0081-08, GS-09, and GS-10 Firefighter must possess the following certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board):
Maximum Entry Age (MEA) The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37.
Maximum Reentry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 24-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 112 hours per pay period.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- Incumbent must maintain a valid Government Driver's License.
- Incumbent must pass fire fighter physical ability test after appointment and annually thereafter.
- The employee must report to work during inclement weather, natural disasters and other emergency situations as directed by Fire Chief and may be subject to mandatory overtime or recall.
- This position requires the employee to work 56 hours per week/112 biweekly hours.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
