ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR

Duties

• You will design, develop, and teach executive education addressing alliance and partnership effectiveness, allied and partner contributions, responsibility-sharing, risk-sharing, strategic alignment, and related Indo-Pacific security challenges.
• You will educate security practitioners on the political, strategic, institutional, and capability factors that shape national willingness and ability to contribute to collective security.
• You will examine alliance and partnership challenges from U.S., allied, and partner perspectives, including differing national interests, threat perceptions, political constraints, capabilities, resources, and willingness to accept risk.
• You will help practitioners assess how allies and partners can develop complementary capabilities, roles, missions, and contributions that strengthen deterrence, resilience, readiness, and collective security.
• You will examine the relationship among political commitment, defense investment, capability development, interoperability, access, industrial capacity, and the ability to act collectively during competition, crisis, and conflict.
• You will lead and support Center activities, including executive education courses, workshops, policy dialogues, senior-leader engagements, strategic visits, and international partnerships
• You will serve as an action officer responsible for planning and executing courses, workshops, strategic dialogues, and regional engagements from concept development through execution and assessment.
• You will develop curriculum, instructional materials, case studies, simulations, and experiential-learning activities appropriate to diverse civilian and military audiences.
• You will teach and facilitate seminars and collaborative learning among security practitioners from throughout the Indo-Pacific.
• You will conduct research and publish scholarly and policy-relevant work addressing alliance and partnership effectiveness, contributions, collective action, responsibility-sharing, strategic alignment, and related Indo-Pacific security issues.
• You will develop and maintain substantive expertise necessary to support executive education, regional engagement, academic partnerships, public outreach, and strategic initiatives.
• You will collaborate across departments and disciplines to integrate alliance and partnership effectiveness, deterrence, security cooperation, regional security architecture, access and posture, industrial capacity, and resilience.
• You will mentor Fellows and contribute to their professional and intellectual development.
• You will contribute to the effective administration and institutional development of the College.
• You will travel internationally in support of DKI APCSS programs and engagements.
• You will maintain productive, professional, respectful, and collegial relationships with leadership, faculty, staff, Fellows, and regional partners.

Qualifications


Essential Criteria

• An advanced degree in international relations, security studies, political science, military studies, public policy, strategic studies, or a related discipline. A doctorate or other terminal degree is preferred.
• Demonstrated substantive knowledge, research, or professional experience relevant to alliance and partnership strategy, responsibility-sharing, burden-sharing, collective defense, security cooperation, political-military affairs, defense policy, capability development, or a closely related field.
• Significant professional or scholarly experience examining how allies and partners translate shared interests into political commitments, capabilities, contributions, or collective action.
• Demonstrated understanding of the political, strategic, institutional, and resource considerations that shape allied and partner decision-making.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research, analyze contemporary security issues, and produce scholarly or policy-relevant work.
• Demonstrated experience teaching, facilitating, or educating adult learners from diverse professional, national, and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to communicate complex political-military and security issues clearly to practitioner audiences.
• Strong organizational and project-management skills with demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and execute complex projects or programs.
• Ability to work effectively as a collegial, collaborative, and team-oriented faculty member.
• Ability to use contemporary technologies and digital tools in research, teaching, collaboration, and program execution.
• Demonstrated commitment to the DKI APCSS mission and to advancing security cooperation and understanding throughout the Indo-Pacific.

• Experience working with or within ministries of defense, ministries of foreign affairs, combatant commands, military organizations, international organizations, policy institutions, or allied and partner governments.
• Significant experience working directly with U.S. allies and partners or experience serving within an allied or partner government or security institution.
• Experience addressing difficult questions involving national contributions, defense investment, capability development, alliance commitments, political constraints, or willingness to accept risk.
• Experience translating national and institutional interests into practical approaches for bilateral or multilateral security cooperation.
• Professional or academic expertise in one or more Indo-Pacific subregions, with particular interest in candidates possessing significant expertise in Northeast Asia or Southeast Asia and the ability to connect subregional dynamics to broader Indo-Pacific security challenges.
• Expertise concerning Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, or other strategically consequential U.S. allies and partners is particularly desirable.
• Experience in executive education, facilitation, strategic engagement, policy dialogue, exercises, or multinational workshops.
• Experience building professional networks and fostering collaboration among individuals from diverse national, institutional, and professional backgrounds.
• Foreign-language capability relevant to the Indo-Pacific.

DKI APCSS seeks qualified candidates at the level of Associate Professor or Professor specializing in Allied & Partner Strategy, Responsibility-Sharing, and Strategic Alignment to join the Department of Allies & Partners.
The successful candidate will educate civilian and military security practitioners on how the United States, allies, and partners can translate shared interests into stronger political commitment, complementary capabilities, meaningful contributions, and collective action. The position focuses on the strategic, political, institutional, and security factors that shape how nations align interests, distribute responsibilities, develop capabilities, and share costs and risks in pursuit of common security objectives.
A central purpose of the position is to deepen understanding of what makes alliances and partnerships effective when security conditions become more demanding. The successful candidate will examine these challenges from U.S., allied, and partner perspectives and help practitioners understand how threat perceptions, national interests, domestic politics, sovereignty, strategic culture, resources, capabilities, trust, and willingness to accept risk affect collective action.
The position will also examine how allies and partners can develop complementary roles and capabilities that contribute to deterrence, resilience, readiness, crisis response, and collective defense. This includes consideration of defense investment, force development, access, logistics and sustainment, industrial capacity, interoperability, security cooperation, and other forms of national contribution.
The successful candidate's academic rank and salary will be determined based on education, professional experience, scholarly record, teaching and facilitation experience, subject-matter expertise, leadership, and demonstrated capacity to contribute to the DKI APCSS mission.
Faculty members at DKI APCSS are expected to be more than subject-matter experts. They serve as educators, facilitators, curriculum designers, action officers, researchers, mentors, and institutional leaders. Faculty plan and execute executive education courses, workshops, strategic dialogues, and regional engagements; develop and facilitate curriculum; conduct policy-relevant research; and build relationships with security professionals throughout the Indo-Pacific.
