Job Description

Chassis CAD Support / Release & Document Control - Engineering

End date: 31DEC27

Location: Onshore Novi Office

Summary

The CAD & Document Support role ensures the accuracy, completeness, and traceability of engineering design data across CAD models, drawings, and documentation systems. This position reviews incoming engineering CAD, identifies clashes or packaging issues, maintains revision control, and updates models or drawings as required. Additionally, this role manages document workflows, ensuring that all technical drawings, specifications, and engineering artifacts are properly uploaded, stored, and maintained within PLM/ERP/document-control systems.

The CAD & Document Support specialist acts as a key link between engineering, technical operations, and manufacturing teams by ensuring design data is correct, approved, up-to-date, and accessible. This position is critical to enabling accurate builds, compliant documentation, and seamless change management throughout the development lifecycle.

1) CAD Review & Model Integrity
  • Review incoming CAD models for accuracy, completeness, correct part orientation, proper coordinate systems, and adherence to modeling standards.
  • Perform clash and interference checks across assemblies, subsystems, and vehicle-level packages.
  • Identify design conflicts, clearances issues, and geometry concerns; route findings to engineering for resolution.
  • Validate that imported CAD aligns with engineering change requests, BOM updates, and release timing.
  • Ensure version control and proper storage of CAD data within PLM or CAD vault systems.

2) CAD Updates & Revision Management
  • Implement changes to CAD models and assemblies based on engineering direction, redlines, or new revisions.
  • Update 2D drawings to reflect revised geometry, tolerances, GD&T, notes, materials, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Track part and drawing revisions to ensure proper alignment with engineering releases.
  • Support engineers by preparing simplified models, packaging envelopes, and compatibility checks.
  • Maintain CAD architecture standards, file naming, and configuration management best practices.

3) Document Control & System Administration
  • Ensure drawings, CAD files, specifications, and engineering documents are properly entered into document control systems (e.g., PLM/ERP).
  • Verify metadata, revision level, document type, workflow status, and approval routing for all uploaded files.
  • Maintain document libraries to ensure clarity, traceability, and audit-ready accuracy.
  • Support engineering and prototype teams by retrieving, publishing, or distributing controlled documents.
  • Ensure document systems reflect the latest approved design intent and supersessions.

4) Drawing Quality, Standards & Compliance
  • Review 2D drawings to ensure they include all necessary dimensions, tolerances, views, notes, material specs, and callouts.
  • Confirm drawings follow internal and industry standards (GD&T, ISO/ASME practices).
  • Identify missing or incorrect information in drawings and coordinate corrections with engineering.
  • Maintain drawing templates, title blocks, symbols, and corporate CAD standards.
  • Support audit and compliance requirements by ensuring documentation accuracy and revision traceability.

5) Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication
  • Align CAD updates and document releases with project requirements.
  • Communicate impacts of CAD or document changes to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Support onboarding of new engineers in CAD/documentation workflows, standards, and best practices.
  • Act as a liaison between CAD users, IT/CAD administrators, and document-control teams to resolve system issues.

Qualifications
  • 3-7+ years of experience in CAD, document control, or mechanical design.
  • Proficiency with CAD platforms (e.g., CATIA, NX, CREO, SolidWorks) and PLM/ERP document management systems.
  • Strong understanding of 3D modeling practices, GD&T, and 2D drawing standards.
  • Experience performing packaging checks, interference analysis, and model validation.
  • Knowledge of revision control, change management, and document-control procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially regarding accuracy and compliance.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional coordination abilities.
  • Bonus: Experience supporting builds through CAD, manufacturing documentation, or vehicle development programs.

KPIs
  • CAD accuracy: number of model errors caught, clash detection completeness, revision alignment.
  • CAD requests: CAD requests are handled in a timely manner.
  • Document quality: drawing completeness rate, revision accuracy, compliance with standards.
  • System performance: document upload accuracy, workflow completion rate, PLM/ERP metadata accuracy.
  • Timeliness: turnaround time for CAD updates, drawing corrections, and document releases.
  • Traceability: audit readiness, configuration traceability, correct document version usage.
