Security Control Assessor

Apex Systems is currently hiring a Security Control Assessor to support highly sensitive, classified environments and mission systems for a large federal client. In this role, you will independently evaluate system security posture, assess security controls, identify gaps, and validate compliance across Information Technology and Operational Technology environments.
Project Details / Mission Supported:
• Conduct security control assessments and independent evaluations of system security posture.
• Review security implementations across on-premises, cloud, hybrid, virtualized, AI/ML, robotic process automation, and cross-domain solutions.
• Provide cybersecurity oversight for complex, enterprise-scale systems and architectures.
• Evaluate security controls, identify gaps, and validate compliance with Risk Management Framework requirements.
• Support security authorization activities and compliance efforts.
• Communicate assessment findings, security impacts, and risk considerations to senior stakeholders and government leadership.
• Operate as an independent assessor and inspector rather than a system owner or system manager.
• Maintain professional communication and composure in high-pressure situations.
Qualified candidates will have the following experience and skills:
• Doctorate degree with 20+ years of experience, Master’s degree with 22+ years of experience, Bachelor’s degree with 24+ years of experience, or 28+ years of experience without a degree in cybersecurity or information security fields.
• Deep understanding of NIST SP 800-53 security controls and Risk Management Framework authorization processes.
• Experience conducting security control assessments and evaluating control effectiveness.
• Strong knowledge of security requirements, organizational structures, and governance within a government environment.
• Ability to assess complex technical implementations across diverse systems and technologies, including IT and OT environments.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting assessment findings and risk impacts.
• Formal experience as a Security Control Assessor is preferred. ISSM or ISSO experience may be considered when an assessment-focused background can be demonstrated.
• Experience conducting security control assessments of operational systems is preferred.
• Knowledge of the Joint Special Access Program Implementation Guide is preferred.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with clients and team members.
• CISSP, CASP+, or another advanced cybersecurity certification is preferred.
Location: San Diego, CA
Onsite expectation: 100% onsite, Monday through Friday during core daytime hours
Clearance Level: Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance
Type: W2 long-term contract, with 4.5 years remaining on the award
Salary/Pay range: $95-$110/hr
