Job Description

Description

Are you ready to engineer the mechanical systems that keep some of the world's most critical infrastructure running? Amazon's Field Engineering team is looking for a Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer to help us keep pace with rapid portfolio growth by optimizing mechanical performance, efficiency, and safety across our expanding fleet of existing data centers. You will apply mechanical engineering principles to tackle thermal, fluid dynamics, and material challenges while developing reusable design standards that raise reliability across builds. This position requires that the candidate selected be a US citizen and obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph. Key job responsibilities - Design and implement mechanical infrastructure solutions for existing data center environments, covering cooling, air handling, and fluid systems that improve site performance and safety. - Develop and refine standard mechanical design templates that simplify system architecture and improve consistency across locations so the broader engineering team can adopt them. - Troubleshoot complex mechanical infrastructure issues by conducting thermal and fluid dynamics analyses, identifying root causes, and leaving systems more maintainable than before. - Collaborate with electrical engineers, construction managers, and operations teams to evaluate design options, weigh long-term value against technical risk, and deliver pragmatic solutions that scale with fleet growth. - Communicate technical designs, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, and contribute to team development through mentoring and design reviews. A day in the life You might start your morning running thermal models and reviewing cooling system specifications for a facility upgrade, then join a design review where you walk construction managers and fellow engineers through your proposed air handling configuration. After lunch, you could be analyzing performance data from an operating data center to recommend mechanical improvements, or updating a reusable design template with lessons learned from a recent project. You will regularly partner with field engineers and operations teams across regions, aligning on standards that improve how we maintain and enhance infrastructure globally. About the team Our Field Engineering team is the authority on infrastructure performance, efficiency, and safety for Amazon's fleet of existing data centers. We keep these facilities running at their best by diagnosing issues, driving improvements, and setting the mechanical engineering standards that sites rely on every day. With the portfolio growing rapidly, there is no shortage of meaningful work ahead. You will have the opportunity to shape engineering practices, mentor teammates, and contribute to projects that directly support millions of customers worldwide.
