Job Description

The Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and sustainment of enterprise network infrastructure supporting Department of War (DoW) operations. This position provides Tier II and Tier III support for network services, ensuring the availability, security, and performance of Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), SD-WAN architectures, Direct Internet Access (DIA) services, and telecommunications infrastructure.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical lead for network engineering initiatives, provide advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis, coordinate with telecommunications vendors and service providers, and support cybersecurity compliance requirements across multiple geographically dispersed locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Network Engineering and Operations
• Design, implement, configure, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure utilizing Cisco and Aruba networking technologies.
• Engineer and support LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, MPLS, SD-WAN, and DIA environments.
• Configure and administer Cisco routers, switches, wireless infrastructure, and security solutions.
• Configure and administer Aruba CX switching, Aruba wireless solutions, Aruba Central, AirWave, and ClearPass environments.
• Develop network architectures, implementation plans, and engineering designs for infrastructure modernization efforts.
• Conduct network performance analysis and optimization to ensure maximum availability and reliability.
• Perform upgrades, migrations, technology refreshes, and lifecycle replacements of network hardware and software.
• Maintain network diagrams, configuration baselines, and technical documentation.

Direct Internet Access (DIA) and WAN Management
• Design, deploy, and support Direct Internet Access (DIA) circuits and enterprise internet connectivity solutions.
• Manage carrier-provided Ethernet, fiber, and MPLS services.
• Coordinate circuit installations, testing, troubleshooting, and service activations with telecommunications vendors.
• Monitor bandwidth utilization, latency, throughput, and service availability.
• Support hybrid WAN and SD-WAN internet breakout architectures.
• Troubleshoot BGP routing, ISP connectivity issues, and provider-related outages.
• Conduct failover testing and continuity-of-operations validation for critical network services.

Incident Response and Troubleshooting
• Serve as Tier II and Tier III escalation support for complex network-related incidents.
• Diagnose and resolve routing, switching, wireless, authentication, and connectivity problems.
• Perform root cause analysis and provide corrective action recommendations.
• Support major incident response activities and service restoration efforts.
• Coordinate with service desk, cybersecurity personnel, field technicians, and leadership during service interruptions.
• Participate in after-action reviews and problem management processes.

Cybersecurity and Compliance
• Ensure network infrastructure complies with DoW cybersecurity requirements and organizational security policies.
• Implement and maintain Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
• Support Risk Management Framework (RMF) compliance activities.
• Coordinate remediation of Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM) requirements.
• Partner with cybersecurity teams to resolve security findings and vulnerabilities.
• Support secure network architectures and access control implementations.

Vendor and Telecommunications Management
• Act as the technical interface with telecommunications providers, contractors, and external support organizations.
• Coordinate with vendors including Lumen, AT&T, Verizon, Comcast Business, and other service providers.
• Manage circuit provisioning, outage escalations, service requests, and performance reporting.
• Validate service level agreement (SLA) compliance and coordinate corrective actions when necessary.
• Support procurement planning and infrastructure expansion activities.

Required Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in information technologies, Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field.
• Relevant military training or equivalent work experience may substitute for formal education.

Experience
• Five (5) or more years of enterprise network engineering experience.
• Experience supporting Cisco and Aruba network infrastructures.
• Experience supporting WAN, MPLS, SD-WAN, and Direct Internet Access (DIA) environments.
• Experience troubleshooting complex network issues in large enterprise environments.
• Experience with vendor circuit management and telecommunications coordination.
• Experience supporting highly available and mission-critical networks.
• Experience supporting DoW, Federal Government, or other regulated environments preferred.

Security Clearance
• Active Secret Security Clearance required.
• Ability to maintain clearance throughout employment.

Certification Requirements
Must possess and maintain:
• DoW 8570/8140 IAT Level II Certification (Security+ CE or equivalent)

Preferred Environment Experience

Candidates with experience supporting DoWEA, Army Enterprise Networks, Department of Defense educational institutions, NIPRNet environments, SD-WAN migrations, Direct Internet Access deployments, Cisco ISE implementations, Aruba ClearPass integrations, and telecommunications vendor management are highly desired.
